ok boys and girls, i have a '91 Ford Escort (enough of the heckling already! - it's paid off!!) i purchased a set of 6x9 boxes to go in my trunk from a friend. they claim to be "600 watt high power" speakers - i don't know if i can believe that. anyway, what would you guys recommend i do to get better performance from my car audio system. i still have the factory front speakers, which appear to be 2" (if that). i don't want to spend a lot of money, i just want something that sounds decent when played fairly loud. i currently have a jvc cd player (25 watt x 4 i believe) and do not plan on replacing it. would something as simple as buying a 100 watt amp for like $50 give me better sound?? or should i look at something beyond that? i don't want to break any windows with thumping bass, just something that sounds clear at higher volumes.

On the 6x9 speakers, I doubt they are 600 watts. That is probably their peak power. What you might want to check is the RMS value of your speakers. This is the true wattage that your speaker is putting out.
Also in order to get some clean sound I recommend on purchasing a good amp. Preferably one with a built in crossover. Also when purchasing an amp chek the THD. The smaller the decimal value the better.
A good amp will probably cost you around $150.00. Happy shopping!

i would suggest you look into speaker placement. since you have bought a couple small boxes, experiment with the placement angles, and consider putting a nice pair of 4 to 4 1/2 inch speakers in the kick panels by the front doors. in a car like yours, the q forms kick panels can make a nice difference in the sound by giving you another placement option for two more speakers and also by balancing out the distance of the speakers from the speaker to the listener. you can basically set your own price on this feature depending on what speakers you buy.
