I have an automatic. Should I pull the hand brake when I park in addtionion to shifting to park? or is it not at all nessasary?

Also My car sometimes jerk when going from park to drive. I notice this jerking stops when going from park to 1 first then go to drive. Is this bad for the car, doesn't matter, or is it actually good to do?

Normally, there is no need for the parking brake but its a good habit. The only time you actually NEED to use it is if you're parking on a slope where your car may roll down. If you do not set the parking brake, it maybe hard - very hard - near impossible to take the car out of park without having someone to push your car slightly forward.
