Thread: for the tournament next time

I think that for the next tournaments you guys hold, you should be alot more organized. I had alot of fun and liked this one alot, but now you have had your first try and can learn from this experience. First off you should either have a poll up months ahead for which maps to play. That way you dont ask the people which map to play JUST before the heat starts. Also you could test-play the maps with several ppl (months ahead) to make sure its good enough for all pings and get good feedback on which maps are good enough (rocket camping possible? camping period? bad layout? use of weapons to kill with other than 1?). I was in the first heat and lost, but still had fun. However the only weapon really used was the rocket launcher. There wasnt really any other weapon that would hold up (the map was Q3DM7 for those who want to know). Next the times should be chosen months early also. I noticed alot of ppl couldnt make it and other problems like email wasnt recieved in time. That would be another thing to fix. Send emails days ahead to be sure who can make it. Oh well I have given my 2 cents, and hope that it helps in setting up the next tournament. If you guys need help setting up a Quake3 CTF tournament email me and I will be glad to help with what I can.

Yeah, I agree, Joe. I would also recommend that they switch to a much more stable operating system, since the various times the server had crashed is just unacceptable. It was obvious that it was running Windows 98. They should at least have tried using Linux, or even Windows 2000. They probably should've had a better net connection and/or a faster computer serving. According to Ook, it is a T1, but I can almost bet it is the same T1 that is serving this site and is also their internal network connection, all through the same line. Even if the server is 2000 miles away, that ping is unacceptable. 300 average on cable? I have had better pings with servers in Nova Scotia (and that is the honest truth, I get about 75 on that server, which is also a T1). The serving connection should be dedicated to only serving the tournament server, nothing else.

I hate to do this, but I will have to go against that OS statement. Windows98 is fine IF it is properly setup. Now I don't know what OS they were using and whether they set it up right or not, but win98 is fine as long as you have it running right. W2k is iffy since I have only experienced **** with W2k (yes I already have it...legally too...benefits of working for a computer company) and Quake3 so far. As for Linux, I can't really say whether that would make it better or not.

I don't think it has nearly as much to do with the system that was running the server as much as it was the routers. There was one down until at least a few hours before the first round. I ran some pings and traceroutes to the system and it was dying along the way. At anyrate, a better ping would've helped. I still would've lost because I believe that the other people were better, but at least it might not have been such a humiliation.

1 - there are different levels of t1's, different tiers.

2 - win98 sucks my ass. CoolJoe, i suggest you take time to learn an actual os like win nt, unix, win 2k ... making statements about the integrity of an os while you know nothing about them is generally a practice looked down on.

3 - the only reason that they had the tourney is because somebody generously allowed gotapex to use a server & a high speed data line. i'm sure they'll use the best connection & server they can find

For someone who thinks they know everything about when to make statements, you made the worst one of all. You ASSumed what I knew. For one I never dissed you or did anything to offend you (that I know of). There IS a more positive way to say what you think about someones opinion. I don't know what you do for a living or what you know, but I am a computer tech that has been dealing with computers for more than 8 years. No I don't count the first time I used a computer or the time it took to understand them. That is 8 years fixing, building, and loading computers as well as helping others with their computer problems. I even ran a computer company for 3 years (left cuz I just didnt want the overhead of owning a company...it was a partnetship). If you count total years using computers that would go to somewhere around 12 years or more. I currently run Win2k and Win98, as well as work with NT4 all day at my work. I don't know enough about linux to make a statement, which is why if you had read my previous post you would have seen that I said I *CAN'T* comment on how well it would work. So next time please don't start off dissing someone you don't even know. Try stating your opinion on OSes. Also, I have had Quake3 problems in Win2k not only with stability but with performance as well....on the final version. I even spent a day with microsoft at a conference going over Win2k and its features and abilities. So don't tell me what I do and do not know. Instead state what YOU know.

    Cool

well, cooljoe, lemme start of by saying that win2k is defintely slower as a gaming solution than win98. but then again, not one vendor has a finaly version of their drivers out for the os yet. so my vote is that time will tell on this one.

2nd, i have no doubt that you are a qualified individual when it comes to certain computing fields. but by the way you commented about win2k it seemed like you've installed it, heard about it, but haven't used many of it's features and aren't very comfortable with the os.

i have been running win2k since it was called nt 5 and dio not feel the need to validate my computer knowledge, i feel that my posts on this forum and others should show if i really know what i'm talking about

    Cool

I know, I have been waiting for final versions of the drivers for the Geforce from either Asus or nvidia. I can say that the beta 2000 drivers from nvidia are slow. I did some testing and found that they were 4fps slower than when in win98 (And I was running dual processor with support enabled - r_smp 1). I am hoping very much that they improve the drivers. I have been using Win2k since Beta3 RC1. It wasnt very great then and RC2 got a little better. The final isnt too bad. I am very comfortable with it and learned alot about the features when I went to the microsoft conference. I'm just not using it as my primary OS until the first service pack comes out and the drivers for the geforce are good. I wish we could have gotten off to a better start, but we can atleast change now. Sorry if I offended you or sounded rude in my previous posts. Us techies shouldnt fight instead we should help each other out.

    Thumbs up

I think you said it quite well CoolJoe. If all the "techies" where to constantly get into a "pissing" contest we would never gain anything. Knowledge should be free... You shouldn't have to get something in return all the time. Remember you might be on the recieving end one day. Above all, everyone is entitled to thier own opinions. No techie should start to come off on the wrong foot. All techies should listen to what each other has to say. A techie might be suprised one day on learning how to do something different for a change - even if it sounds completely wrong.

sorry CoolJoe if i jumped all over you ... like i said, i've been using win2k since it was called nt5 ... it became my primary os with rc2 (build 2128) and the only drawback is ****ty drivers from nvidia for me right now ... it's super hard to go back yto win98 now, and it makes win98 feel very unstable.

let's have a shout out to all the techies, eh?

    Question

I just switched over to Win2K. Love it, except I just had a first system freeze.

    Reset.

ICQ no longer working. It can't even load up. So I reinstalled a billion times, and it's still not working. icq.exe keeps generating an error. #$*%%@($*&$

    Any thoughts?

ICQ is working well for me. I've installed it via both upgrades from 9.x and NT as well as fresh installs in 2k. If you could send me the error message or post it, I might be able to help a bit more.

    ICQ 99b Build 2569.

"Icq.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created."

    From Dr. Watson:
"The application, , generated an application error The error occurred on 02/18/2000 @ 01:38:19.593 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 2188E9C8 (BCRichEditCtrl::`default constructor closure')"

    Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah...lets give a shout to all the techies! I may not be running it for a primary, but I do have it installed on a seperate hard drive that I connect once in awhile so I can mess with win2k. Are you also running dual processors and a geforce? I love it in Win98 (no problems that I couldnt solve yet), but I want to switch to Win2k. I guess I'll just have to wait and see whether nVidia and ID Software can make their products work better under Win2k.
