    SS: Money Spent on Halloween

From the local news broadcast today I heard that we in America spend over $3 Billion (yes BILLION!) on Halloween candy, costumes, and other associated goods. What a freaking waste of money. Just imagine all the other things that could be done with that cash...

Me too Nickel! I've decorated the office, and signed us up for a scene at the pumpkin walk. Plus I got brownie points for suggesting we do it for free advertising. You should have heard all the guys grumbling when they found out they had to carve pumpkins. I love it!

Don't be such a party pooper. People spend about $5 billion on porn, think of the things that could be done with that cash, too. Are we supposed to stop the sex-deprived husbands and boyfriends of the country from getting what they can't get with dinner and a movie anymore?

Yeah and while you're at it might as well do away with Christmas and Thanksgiving. They are all a waste of money. Could be the dumbest post of the day.

I read in Rubbish that more candy is wasted after valentines day than after halloween, so if you want to pick on a wasteful holiday, make it that one!

Clearly the meaning of Christmas is to spend lots of money on gifts and put up lights on our house. Consumerized Christmas in America that is all about gifts IS a waste of money. Thanks for the snide comment about that being the dumbest post of the day. You're a class act.

I don't see anything wrong with Thanksgiving because people are eating dinner or lunch. They'd most likely eat a meal that day anyway.

Don't even get me started on ow stupid Valentine's day is. My fiance and I don't need a day to be romantic or for me to treat her well. She's the first one to go off on how lame V-day is.

The money could better be spent on 150 million lap dances.

Don't you remember being a kid Halloween is fun and you could never tell a kid halloween is a waste of money. Pass out candy and see how much joy you will be giving children then maybe you won't think it's a waste of money

i will pass out a bit of candy if i'm at home. not many kids live in our complex so we don't get much trick-or-treat acting.

it's not so much the candy that gets me, though it is a little bit. it's more the outrageous prices people pay for costumes and decorations. and it's not just for kids, i think adults are more guilty of it sometimes. $70 for a Spiderman costume that someone or someone's kid will wear once, maybe twice. that's where the waste is.

and just to note, when i was a kid my mom and/or grandma made costumes for us. i'd say in all the years that my sister and i were of trick-or-treating age, my parents probably spent $100 on the 2 of us. That's for 2 kids for 10 or so years.

My daughter is 5 and I or my mother has made every costume except this year and it is cheaper to buy one off the rack then it is to make one yourself. Also alot of used once costumes could be donated so another child could use it next so your money is not being wasted

My mom made every costume for my sister and I from the time we were 3 years old to 10 years old. Then we had to make or buy them ourselves
    And closer...
