Honestly, you don't even need those SBC programs to use your DSL. I never install any of those.

The only reason I'd even use their disk is for the initial account setup... after that, I can put the settings that I want directly into WinXP or the router (whichever is going to be dialing in)

So yeah... you can get rid of all of that stuff if you don't use it.

DarkFury do you have SBC? My parents have it and I couldn't get it to work without that damn connection manager. I was unsuccessful getting rid of it. I cannot stand the hoops that SBC makes you jump through just to get online. Especially with their "wireless" router. You have a CSE degree to get that beawtch to work, let alone without all their crappy software!

Yup... I have SBC Global... and I don't use their "crapware".

Pretty much, the ONLY reason you need their software is to create the initial account... after that, you can remove it and use regular PPoE protocols to set up your connection.

The Connection Manager is BS in my opinion... it had bugs in it from the very start. WinXP can do the same thing using its dial up program with your UserID and Password for SBC global... Routers can do the same as well (as long as you configure them for PPoE).

You don't have to jump thorough the hoops if you don't wanna... BTW... some of SBC's problem is in the modem itself. If you use a router and you have their newer SpeedStream modems (they are all black and sorta rounded on the edges) then if you want to use a router you have to reconfigure the modem to "bridge mode".

In SBC's great wisdom... they converted to these newer modems to "facilitate" the connection process (i.e. the modem was trying to act like WinXP or a router and dial up the connection itself so that it was "always on".) Pretty much, this really futz with everything else if you want to do that part yourself...

I've had my fair share of bumps and bruises with SBC, but so far... I've pretty much figured them out (at least until the next time they want to change their hardware specs. )

BTW... I don't have a CSE degree. Just pure natural talent.

Yeah, I had SBC for a while & I never installed any of that crap, either. As long as you get it running on your router OK you're good to go. No need to even install any of their stuff.

I'm using Yahoo DSL for over a year now and I don't need to install the Yahoo software. If you have a router, you could setup the PPPoE using your router. Otherwise, use Windows networking wizard to setup the internet connection.
