Question Need Memory and CPU fan info for Pavilion

    Hello All,
My first post on Got Apex.
First : Discovered the site accidentally, and find it fantastic. Hope to learn from it and contribute to it.

Things on top of my head now:
I am shortly going for a brand new machine. Either assembled by myself or from Dell. But until then, I am copiing up with my old HP Pavilion 8670, 700 Mhz, 128 MB Ram etc. Lately, the CPU fan has been making a lot of noise, infact too much to drive me insane. Tried to take if apart, but only partially successful. Can't remove the motherboard (no expertise). Anyways,I will try to figure a way out. But where should I be buying a fan? Online or at Best Buy? And what kind of fan should I get?

Also, I am thinking about making it my second machine, to run a small little website, run some database etc. I guess I will need to upgrade memory to a reasonable 256 at least, more if possible. What sort of memory should I get? and from where? And, after upgrading the memory, should I just leave the machine as it is, or update BIOS?

Any help from gotapexers is more than welcome. i appriciate your responses in advance.

    Thx,
    AZR

Hi, and welcome to the forums!

I'll let someone with some overclocking experience answer the fan issue, since I don't know of any good fan sources off the top of my head.

For the memory, Crucial.com is my favorite place to buy from - they're reasonably priced & you get a lifetime warranty.

See if you can find the list of things updated with the newer BIOS releases on the HP site. If you see a change that you think might affect you, by all means apply the newer BIOS.

    Have fun!

Yes you could buy a fan online as long as you know what kind of fan it's. You could take a picture and give us dimension of the fan.

For RAM, Kingston and Crucial are the ones of the best out there.
    Dell Dimension 9200 | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz) | 4x1GB DDR2 | 256MB nVidia GeForce 8800GT

    Dell Studio 17 | Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6GHz) | 6GB DDR3 1066MHz | 1GHz ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

    Intel P4-C 3.0GHz | ECS 865PE-A | 3x512MB PC3200 | 128MB PNY GeForce 6600GT

What kind of CPU do you have?? You should buy a Heatsink that was designed for that CPU.... Crucial, Kingston, Corsair are the best memory manufacturers....

Thanks Folks, for a warm welcome to the GotApex forums.
Mine is an HP 8670c. Tried to find out what kind of memory it has (Crucial.com has a excellent way to find that out), and find that memory is not all that extensible. But I can still upgrade it to 382MB (3 banks of 1). I will try to upgrade it soon.
AFA fan is concerned, I am not really sure about its configuration. Is there a way from BIOS to find that out?

Thanks for all your responses. I appriciate them very much.
