I might cross over to the dark side...

My friend is leaving the country and she asked if I would take over her lease of her 2004 BMW 530i. By the time she leaves, the car will have about 22 months left on the lease and 42,000 miles remaining. That is just about the right mileage for me. The price is right, but I don't like the fact that the car is manual.

I drive a manual and probably always will. That said there are some good reasons for wanting an automatic. If you spens a lot of time in stop and go traffic, basically anyone who lives in a big city and needs to commute, an automatic is better. Also if you live in a place like San Francisco with lots of hills you'll probably be better served with an automatic.

i drive a manual in stop-n-go traffic... but our rush hour here only lasts an hour, and i've got alternate routes that run me through mile-apart stop signs/lights instead of doing the bumper-2-bumper thing.

The 530i is a pretty nice car. Take it if you think the price is right. I would take the last gen 5 series over the new 5 series.

yeah, driving manual in Los Angeles is pretty rough if you have to commute on the 5, 101, 405, 110, 10, 23 or any other major highway during any commuting hour.

There is a "23" highway??? I know of the famous 22 and the Orange crush (22, 5, and 55) only.

I drive a pretty hellacious commute everyday and I'd die if I was driving a stick. But, if the price is really good, it may be worth doing even if you have a bad commute.

23 is up in Ventura county and connects with the 101. 2 lane highways here don't work, and that's what the 23 is.

i drive the 210, 57, 71 and sometimes the 60 each day in my manual (6 speed) matrix. it's no problem. i love driving stick and i don't think i will ever own another automatic again. and for the record i am from the SF Bay Area and spent lots of time in San Francisco. The hills just make it more adventurous.

Manual tranny BMW? As said, if the price is right, go for it.

That's about what I was thinking...

    Anyway...

I have always driven a manual. I learned to drive on an auto. Manual tend to get better gas mileage, last longer, and have better manners on the road, since you can adjust how much torque you want to put down on your tires. But...there have been times when I have been stuck in traffic, and I could seriously feel the calf-burn from all the shifting. 1.2.N.1.N.1.N.1.2.3.N.1.2.etc

heh if you're getting calf burn you seriously need to work out more!!!
As for having a standard, I don't even think about it and yes I do commute on the 101 into downtown LA so I know the feeling of gridlock.
