How to handle graduate school admission decision

So, good news, I received notification that I have been accepted to an MBA program.

The bad news is that they want a decision (and deposit) before I hear back from any of my other schools. This deadline is about this time in December. I want to hear back from the other schools before I commit to this school. How should I tell them that I can't decide before the deadline?

I am sure there is a valid reason for them doing this, the cynical part of me thinks they want to put you in this exact position.

I would ask the dean for an extension of a couple weeks due to personal reasons beyond your control.

I'm pretty sure you're right. I think it's unreasonable, though. I wonder if they'll revoke my admission if I ask for an extension.

I'm thinking that I will ask for an extension, but I guess I should wait until closer to the deadline huh?

wait 3 weeks or wait until 3 weeks before the deadline. The deadline is December 17th, so 3 weeks before is next week.

I take it that this school isnt your first choice? Do you have any idea when your first choice school will be giving you a decision and how likely it is that you would get in?

There is another option of calling up the other schools that you are waiting on telling them that you need to know before X date and try to make it so that you are pushing them. I know someone who was in a similar situation and I believe he ended up getting all the others to respond before the deadline. I just dont know how favorable pushing is to getting in to your top choice school.
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine...Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been....

Well, I don't care if I hear back from my number 1 school before this deadline, just any other school. And yes you're right. This school is not my first choice. It's my backup backup school. If I get into another school before then, then this deadline is moot.

The other thing that irks me is that they want me to commit before I can even apply for financial aid. FAFSA 2005 comes out like Jan 3. How can they expect me to commit to paying $100,000 before I even know I have a way to pay for it?

How much is the deposit that they want? If it is a small amount then just eat it. Call it an insurance policy or something. If it is a lot then I would call the schools you are waiting on and see when they'll let you know. I'm sure they have heard your story before and might help somehow.

I wouldnt worry too much about FAFSA...basically you will get your 18,500 each year without a problem. The issue normally develops when you go for the private lender loans to cover the difference between the Stafford loans and the amount you really need.

I know that for law school, my stafford loans covered all but a few thousand of the tuition. Obviously, there was that amount PLUS books, supplies, and living expenses. Frankly, in college I was an idiot with my credit cards and had a few late payments as well as two major disputes with the cards regarding unauthorized charges. As a result, my credit was messed up when I started law school and I couldnt get any private lender loans on my own. Fortunately, due to the kindness of my family and working during school I was able to come up with the difference. (I made the "wrong" choice on my law school based on laziness and scholarships...if I had stayed stong I would have ALOT less debt than I do now, but hindsight is 20/20)

I would caution you that although some will tell you that the name/prestige of your school doesnt matter in the long run...the truth is that it does come into play. In the beginning the name will be one of the main decision criterias since the reality is they have few other things to base it on. Later on in life, the name means less if you have a good CV, but realize that if you go to Podunk school of Business...graduate in the top 1/2 of the class and then have X,Y, and Z on your resume and go against a graduate of Wharton who graduated in the top 1/2 of his class and has X,Y, and Z on his resume...chances are the name will once again be in play.

With business schools I agree with you totally. That's why I want to wait for my other schools. Rice is my last option. My other 5 schools are in the top 10-15 in the nation.

I guess I'm thinking about FAFSA as an excuse to see if I can push the deadline back.

I would agree with uf. I was able to get an interview at an i-bank in nyc, did VERY well in it and was the 2nd candidate on the list. Ultimately it was a combo of skill and school that beat me. The guy that got the job was a double wharton graduate with 18mo of experience in that field of analysis.

I still talk to the guy that almost hired me and he said that the guy is doing well. I take a lot of pride that a smaller school graduate was able to compete with the big guys and almost beat a wharton grad.

The job I am in now I work with the same guys I would have been working with, I got really lucky with the job I am at. Although I will end up in the same area, it will take me 5 or so years longer to get there.
