calling all tech support g|a-er's... end-luser brain teaser!

okay. this one should be fun to figure out.

so my step-mother-in-law emailed me to ask me to help her with a "computer problem." from what i can gather, she must be doing something really, really, really, REALLY dumb (she's a my-cupholder-is-broken kinda gal ) ... but it's so dumb that i can't even hazard a guess as to what might be going on. i probably need to say something like "are you sure you're like, clicking on the icon?" but i don't want to make her feel like an idiot... so any guesses and advice would be much appreciated...

here's an amalgam of the problem from emails, in her own words...

I need some tekki advice--I have never been able to open an email attachment. Yours are fine because the photos run at the bottom of the message. But whenever I get a message with just the paper clip in the upper right hand corner--nothing happens. I click on the clip and 2 boxes display--the top one to open and the bottom to save to disc and regardless of which one I click--zilch. Any suggestions?? By the way--this is with the new Dell--never had a problem on the old computer and we're using the Brick network for both.

no box appears when I click save and I had tried right clicking before to no avail. Do you think I should call Brick--would they have anything to do with providing the info for the attachments?

I'm using Outlook Express in Windows (XP I think). Whatever version came with the new machine.

Sounds like the security is set to not allow her to open possibly hazardous attachments. When I get on my PC I will post instructions, otherwise someone should be able to tell you right away.

why don't you just vnc to her machine and see what happens? much easier then doing this over the phone

    1. Start Outlook Express.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    3. Click the Security tab, click to clear the Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus check box under Virus Protection, and then click OK.

She doesn't sound THAT dumb. I asked one user what operating system she was on and she said Office 2000.

i had that problem with the pre-installed image viewer from Dell on previous machines. It doesn't like to open attached pictures but it is the default program. It pretty much sucked all around. If you can explain it to her, try to save the image on the desktop and then drag the image icon into a browser IE browser window to let IE display the image. Just a thought because that's what I did. Finally I just removed the Dell Image viewer software and made my browser the default image viewer. I had to remove the Dell Image viewer completely otherwise it would automatically take over as the default...sneaky bastard of a program.

This should probably go in the Software or Tech Support forum...

Burz is right -- you (or if you want to give any of us control of her computer ) should have her set up VNC so you can check it out and possibly even fix it.
    And closer...

it was the security thing... got it fixed.

sorry about the wrong forum, i thought this was more funny than an actual tech issue...
