Look for LOTS of essay contests. Some of those things pay $1000. Several of those and you could pay for all four years.

Ya not to mention SMRT, I mean smArt... lol
Ya there was a girl at my highschool who had 4.0 1600 on her SAT's and she got full rides everywhere plus scholarships, I think she was making about 20k a year to go to college... lucky %#@$@ and then I am paying 35k... snikes... what a jip.

I have one other suggestion: unless you get into a school like Univ. of Virginia or UMich, don't go to a public school out of state. It's just not worth the money. If colleges took flooz and I had some flooz I would give it to you. But I'm serious about the essay thing. You'd be amazed how much dough you could win like that.
-
Yup a lot of scholarships are left unclaimed. I was going to go for some myself but never got the time to search them out. I suggest going to state U also if u are conserned with money. I got a very hefty scholarship from my school and that was deffntly a deciding factor.
-
If you're really short on cash, go to a state univ and do really really well. Then look for scholarships.

I heard that some Universities take American Express Blue and if you find a cheaper college within 60 days of enrollment the CC company reimburses you. There's also a Degree-Moneyback-Guarantee where if you're college degree doesn't get you a job in the field that you studied within 90 days they will refund your college tuition for 4 years.

did you apply for financial aid?

penny pinch ~~ that was a unique situation. I don't think most people would be able to actually "make" money off of going to college. None of my friends have, as we are all struggling to make it through financially.

Oh sure, I don't disagree at all. He was very well suited to academia, and just knew how to a) find scholarships and b) ingratiate himself with professors. However, if you have true financial need, it is not totally out of the question to have one's tuition SIGNIFICANTLY reduced. I was lucked enough to pay full tuition without a dime (yay
) but alternatively, some of my friends were going to school for $50 a month. And this from a miniscule liberal arts college, so I can only imagine larger schools can do better.

If she was in fact that intelligent, the schools offering her full rides were probably not what she was looking for anyway. When i was looking for schools, all the ones that were desireable stopped giving merit-based aid a long time ago. It's mostly based on financial need these days.

Not all of us are intelligent as you. I didnt say it wasn't possible, but not all of us have a paved gold road ahead of us. I don't doubt that you worked hard in h.s. and you deserve every penny of your scholarships. On the other hand, I don't receive any financial aid, or grants. I also don't qualify for any TAP, didn't win any scholarships, or anything else funded by the government. I was not a slouch in hs either, but I was unfortunate enough to attend a highly competitve one. It was named among the top 100 in the nation. People have often said to me, you should have enough money to cover college then right? Wrong, not if your parents do not support you and you have to work to put yourself through school. Anyways, your're in the minority among most of us needy college students...

Its very possible...i am making at least $300 a semester from college...i'm on a full ride scholarship, and I resell my books back
. If my SAT's were 10 points higher, I would be making $3000 more a year for the national merit scholarship, and if my GPA was literally .02 higher (3.68 vs. 3.70) it would be $6k a year IN POCKET for college. Talk about possible, with 0 effort.
Just about pennypinch's comment about how no one wants to go to free ride schools- I turned down Brown to go to U of Maryland for free because they have a better Computer Engineering department anyway. Plus the DC area is the place to be now.

It doesn't take just intelligence to get you to college with grants and aid. It takes a lot hard work and endurance in order to get there. You can't expect not to just be average and accept it. Feeling that you can make a difference is all you need. It is all about having the passion and confidence to excel. It's not how smart you are it's how harworking and ambitious you are. Sure intelligence plays a small role, but the bigger role comes from your perservance. I had to work hard all through highschool and am working even harder in college. If you work hard enough, anything is possible.

Wow, you sound like those the more you know commericals don't you? If you read my post, I said that I was no slouch in h.s. as well as college and that I had good grades. I was, and still am quite a hard working student. Intelligence and grades separate those who qualify for scholarships. I was turned down on many based merely upon my ranking in my highly competitive h.s. With an average in the mid 90's, I ranked in the 15th percentile instead of the top 5%. I took it upon myself to attend this highly competitive h.s. in order to challenge myself. In other schools, I arguably would have easily challenged to be a valedictorian or a saluatorian.
I took pride throughout my academic career in not being "just average and accepting it." I strived to excel, and won numerous writing contests (no monetary winnins however) as an example of my diligence. And yes, I do have that "passion" and "confidence" that you speak so highly of. It is what has gotten me so far academically. Although I do not have any scholarships, I feel confident in my studies that I will be able to pay off my loans and succeed in major.
Please think long and hard before you respond and take personal shots at me. I do take things personally.

blah..enough is enough. tired of this scholarship talk. Yes, you have good points. Also, yes, I did alot of community service and volunteer work (awards from Key Club, member of Nat'l Arista Honor Society, volunteer @ local hospital for three years etc etc)since I forgot to mention that in my previous posts. Also, I took 4 AP classes as well as working 15 hours a week at the local movie theatre. No, I'm not bragging. Just responding to the comments others have made as for reasons why I didn't get chosen. Sometimes you just don't get choosen for certain scholarships..

Yeah, working hard in hs in no way gaurantees you a full ride anywhere. I had a 4.0, 33s, 1400s, all that stuff, and I got basically poo from every school I applied to, and was rejected by almost every scholarship committee. A lot of it has to do with how much community service and things like that do for you. Unfortunately, playing sports only gets you BEHIND as far as scholarships go, because you don't have as much time for NHS, student council, and all the extracurriculars. It doesn't matter how well you do in the sports you play, most scholarship committees actually look down on that now. Oh well, I'm still going for not a lot of money, because one school finally gave me money. So no more complaining

I am not trying to offend you, that isn't my intention. Not all scholarships are based on intelligence and grades, there are various types out there. I won one for writing an essay and telling them how hard it was to hold a job and take full blown Advanced Placement courses during highschool. Writing a essay to win a scholarship doesn't take intelligence, it takes practice to develop the skill. Since you said that you won numerous writing awards, you should know that the art of writing depends on the skill and the propensity on the individual. I don't doubt that you do have the confidence or passion to do well in academics. No where in my post did I say that you didn't have the confidence to do well. I don't see how this post can offend you. I am merely saying that pure intelligence doesn't mean that you will win all scholarships out there. Please lighten up and not assume things. I didn't mean any bad intentions. I really didn't.
