Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of building a computer, but only have $1000 to spare. Any advice on what I can build for that kind of money ? Here is what I'm hoping for:

600 Mhz Celeron,PIII, Athlon or Duron
    128 MB SDRAM
    20 gigs
    CDRW
    19inch monitor
good sound and video and speakers...

Think I can get it done with $1000 ???

    Any advice would be appreciated...

I think you can do it but it may be tight. Part of it depends on your sound and video, all you said was good. A good video card could be anyware from a perfectly good $50 card to a top of the line $300 card. The main thing to remember is that you can always put in like 64megs of ram until a later date when you have more money. Other places to cut cost would be to put in a 30 or 40 dollar cd rom and get the CD-R at a later date. You could also get a video card for about $15 that will be great for regular 2d stuff like surfing the net and will have enough 3d performance to play many 3d games. You just wont have the best frame rates and some of the latest games may not be playable. All of those would be ways to get the computer going on a budget. Like I said in the begining, I think you can do it but the monitor may put you over your limit. I dont know what a good 19in monitor costs but I imagine it would probably be around 450. One last thing, dont forget to include shipping money you are adding up the prices of all your componants.

Abit K7T-Raid--$170

Geforce 2 mx--$126

Toshiba 6x dvd-rom w/ H+ decoder card--$136.89

GlobalWin FOP32-1 27CFM--$20

SB Live! Value--$50

floppy dd--$10

IBM 75GXP 30 gb--$150

AMD Duron 650--$80

128 mb ram pc 133 cl2--$130

keyboard--free at rocketboard or swiftboard

mouse--dirt free too.

total w/o shipping (these are fairly reasonable prices) $798.

You got 300 more to go. . . hmm, maybe get a higher quality 17 incher rather than a 19 inch low budget. And cdrw. . . hmmm, well at under 1k. . . hmmm, not sure what to recommend, give me some time. And speakers. . . get some altec lansings for under $50.

I recommend going to a computer show if you can. If you're in the L.A. area the Pomona fairplex has a show coming up the 9th and 10th of September. Hope this helps ya a little.
