I bought this NEC drive from Newegg. I've yet to burn a single coaster. I'm very pleased with it.
the nec 3500 is great, if you go to cdfreaks.com many people have great things to say about it. I use it and have burned close to 200 dvd's without error.
edited to say that i agree with above post. I purchased mine from pcmicrostore.com but they are very similarly priced.
I hear great things about the Pioneer. Supposed to be up there in the teams of Plextor.
If con is the opposite of pro, then what's the opposite of progress?
how about the sony one?
anyone know anything about that?
Pioneer DVR-108 is really good... I used the hacked firmware and it can burn 4x dvds at 16x... Havnt received any errors...
The above mentioned burners are great brands. I personally have a Lite-On Dual Layer DVD+-/RW and have yet to turn out a coaster. They have a great deal on this burner on Newegg.com
I have a 8x and 16x NEC -/+ burner and both work great.![]()

Thanks everyone for your input! I went with the NEC 3500 (silver)
Happy New Year!

The Sony deal ended last night.

well that wasn't my question really. I was wondering how it rates compared to the NEC and the Pioneer.
My plextor is happy, but i am looking for a new one... and i was wondering about the sony as well.

Pioneer all the way!! I could burn 4x discs at 16x using the Nil's firmware...
what is Nil's firmware ?
Delta I emailed you did you get it?
Here you can download the Unoffcial firmware for Pioneer DVR-108 by NIL from http://gradius.rpc1.org/DVR-108D%20into%20DVR-108DX.zip, This firmware allows the burner to burn 4x or 8x Discs at 16x... I dont have any problems or errors after burning using 16x.. you can also check gradius.rpc1.org for other Pioneer DVD writer firmwares...
I never receive emailfrom G|A for some reason and it goes to spam folder and gets trashed... so the best way for you guys to contact me is by AIM @ Josh64FX

sony is way overpriced. and if u want, you can always just buy a maddog or something for 50 or 60, and its the same speed. they dont last as long thoughOriginally Posted by cheapchinese
well I like that you can overburn them. Pioneer isn't so bad. I bought a few NEC drives at $39 and sold them on ebay for at least $60 so the pioneer becomes free![]()
Some Sonys are rebadged Lite-Ons.

I'm getting that Pioneer DVR-108 after getting a Samsung TS-H552B for Christmas. I'm sending the Samsung back because it wouldn't read the cdr's I have. Bleh. Apparently it's very media brand sensitive. And I've heard nothing but rave reviews about the Pioneer. So...
Got anyplace cheaper than $87 at meritline?

They are just bare drives, though. But it looks like the one from Meritline is too so ZZF seems like your best bet. I love those guys.

What do you mean bare drives?
