bah. stupid discussion. Consoles have worse graphics because right now they're 3 years behind computer technology. You can't compare that.

Besides, it doesn't matter which has better graphics, etc. Consoles are better suited for a lot of games like sports, action, platformers, racing, etc., while PCs are better for FPS, RTS, and some RPGs.

Don't pick a platform just because you think it's better than the other. Pick it because of the games. The games is where it matters, everything else is just fanboy fodder.

To me... different types of games are more suited to each platform.

Fighters, sports, and other "action" games... are definitely better on the console.

MMRPGs, RPGs, FPS, and other "complex" control games are better on the computer.

Computers definitely get the better graphics and stuff... because it's not ridiculous to say "this game requires such and such video card, and we recommend this top-end shiznit to make it really sparkle" whereas it would be ridiculous to say "you need to buy this new video card and install it in your XBox/PS2 to play this game". And as somebody pointed out, this generation of consoles is old. The XBox hit in 2001, and the PS2 is older than that. Old technology, but they're definitely getting the most out of what they have. I sat in on a Microsoft tech talk with one of the guys from the XBox team, and he talked about the platform-specific optimizations they are able to do that would be impossible for PC games because everybody has non-uniform hardware.

That said, I prefer console simply because for about $350 I can have a top-end console with four controllers and a game that my buddies and I can play. The computer parallel of that is four high-end computers with four copies of the software, which is easily more expensive, and then there's the whole matter of everybody bringing their equipment to my apartment. Online play is sort of making this a moot point, but there's still nothing like playing a game in the same room. Halo 2 parties man.

I am probably biased because I don't have a top-end computer (I'm running a 1.7 with a GeForce 2) and can't/don't play the newest games because of that. I'm pretty happy with the console game selection; PS2 has a HUGE library, probably better than PCs... and even XBox has a healthy smattering of great games. XBox puts out enough games to satisfy me.

Party games, split screen shooters, and platform jumpers = console
    Everything else = computer

Also, RTSs are abyssmal on consoles.

Good point Bires. Games like WarCraft, C&C, etc... MUST MUST MUST be played with a keyboard and mouse. I would add fighting games and possibly sports games to your list of console genres though. 3-D action/adventure (Mario 64, Fable, etc) can go either way I guess.

But computers do so much more than just play games.... most $350 computers wouldn't play games for crap.

Hell, the really good video cards would cost that much...

yeah thats exactly my point. its unfair to compare the two because a $350 console will never match up to a decked out $3000 falcon northwest. its like comparing the quality between a sharp 20" tv to a sharp aquos.

IMO, one of the big advantages of video games is that you can easily hook it up to a big screen tv which makes a huge difference.

Now if everyone could hook up their computers to projectors, that would be a different story.

Can you send and retrieve e-mail on your console?

How about surfing G|A? How about composing a letter in MS Word... I haven't seen that disc for XBox yet.

Wow.. you can? Geez.. you got a SUPER XBox...

Just because you can play games on the net... doesn't make your XBox a "computer". :wavey"
