    All Three Next-Gen Consoles at e3 2005

    From /.

    http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl...id=212&tid=211

Word is now out that, in all likelyhood, all three next generation consoles will be displayed in some form at this year's e3. Nintendo's Revolution has been rumoured to be making an appearance for a while. Yesterday Sony announced the PS3 would be available in playable form at the convention, and Microsoft was soon to follow regarding the Xbox Next. Game on?

I think it will be hard to say which system will be best until we see some software/developer rosters. If PS3 again gets most of the third-party developers, it could again be a long system generation for MS and Nintendo.

Sony PlayStation 3 Playable by May, Says Report.

Report Cites Sony as Confirming PS3 by May, 2005

    [ 01/28/2005 | 11:30 AM ]

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., a subsidiary of Sony that deals with consoles and digital entertainment, reportedly said its PlayStation 3 console will be functional by May, 2005, confirming earlier available information.

“Sony has cryptically announced that the PlayStation 3 will be in playable form at E3 in May. Additionally, Sony will make an announcement about the system at the end of March,” a report over Voodoo Extreme web-site says.

While currently it is unclear whether there are any actual titles to showcase by May at E3 show, or the company plans to roll-out certain tech demos. However, the information confirms Sony’s earlier announced milestones for the console.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 console is projected to be based on the set of innovative technologies by a number of companies. The next-generation console will be fuelled by the Cell processors, new graphics processing unit jointly developed by NVIDIA Corp. and Sony, XDR DRAM memory and interfaces developed by Rambus as well as will use Blu-Ray discs for content distribution.

Sony originally said it will reveal more details on the PlayStation 3 at a premiere event in Japan on March 31, 2005. The console will also be on display at next year’s E3 confab in Los Angeles, California.

In order to make the console work Sony will need to have all crucial components for the machine – the Cell processor, the GPU, supporting logic and XDR DRAM – available in silicon.

I think PS3 will be the weakest of the next-gen systems. Now.. before all you Sony people start balking, let me explain why.
Most exclusives that PS3 has over Xbox are only decent, Xbox has Halo and other exclusives over Sony that put it ahead. The Nextbox will be graphically superior to the PS3 which will start putting the PS3 at a disadvantage to begin with. Of course the PlayStation die-hards will stay on board but I think the Microsoft share of the market will continue to increase.

Now, the hardest part of this claim to support is Nintendo over PS3 and I must say right off the bat, this is not agiven. Nintendo has to make some good choices. Nintendo has the most popular exclusives (people will argue Halo and such but add up all the mario and zelda games and compare to halo.. you get my drift) btu Nintendo needs to open the door for more violent games (namely, GTA) and they need to start using the same size media as everyone else. N64 didn't do so well because they were in love with the cartridge, developers don't want to touch gamecube because of the 1.4gb discs as opposed to 4.7 on a dvd. Nintendo also needs to embrace online play (which they have said they are). One thing it looks like Nintendo will have which is cool, I read that the controllers will have a gyroscope built in and there will be feedback in games of that sense. (rotation of the controller and movement of the whole unit, etc) which could definitely be cool. So we will see, only time will tell.

Oh and yah, the next Nintendo is supposed to be more powerful than PS3 as well..

Old enough to be your father. It is too bad you do not have the attention span to read all the way through this "long" article of what, thirteen lines? LOL! I just share information. It is up to you to decide to read it or not or what to do with it. You are welcome to post facts too.

Show me proof. Don't spout off an opinion when you have nothing to back it up with. Have you seen in game images from either system? Compared games between systems?

Why is Halo and the "other" (what others?) Xbox exclusives enough to put it over Sony's games? Gran Turismo? Final Fantasy? Grand Theft Auto? Those games ring a bell? How about Nintendo's reign with Mario, Zelda, Metroid and others? It seems to be that aside from Halo, Xbox doesn't have much to hang its hat on in the way of exculsives.

Why? Why do they need to use the same media? Sure, developers always want more. But it looks like the in house developers did ok with what they were given. It looks like they've done a pretty good job with what they chose (Zelda, Metroid, Metroid 2, etc. etc.). Those games have plenty of content, detail, music.

If you're going to make claims, back them up. If you're mearly stating an opinion, don't try to make it come off as fact.

Fanboi's like you need to objectively look at things instead of just spouting off nonsense.

JLemonJello you're completely clueless. IrishSS picks apart your false statement pretty effectively. One I had a particularly hard time with was this:
Most exclusives that PS3 has over Xbox are only decent, Xbox has Halo and other exclusives over Sony that put it ahead.
Xbox has a few choice exclusives like Halo 2, Fable, and KOTOR 2... but to say PS2 doesn't get better exclusives is ridiculous. GTA 3 is a game that received near-perfect scores from nearly every reviewer. Gran Turismo 4 is a game that people have anticipated since Gran Turismo 3. Throw in the Final Fantasy series and COUNTLESS other RPG series exclusives (Xenosaga and Kingdom Hearts for example), and account for the fact that the PS2 game library absolutely DWARFS the Xbox software lineup, and you have no choice but to conclude that PS2 has the edge in exclusive titles. As one who doesn't enjoy the Gamecube exclusives, I cannot agree with IrishSS's statement that Nintendo has better exclusives than Xbox (sales would indicate otherwise), but certainly PS2 does. The strength of the Xbox is not in the exclusives alone, but also in the superior execution of multi-platform games and the utilization of superior hardware features (hard drive!). THAT, and not the Xbox-exclusive titles alone, is why MS has gained ground on Sony recently.

Wow you guys are vicious =)
All I am stating is opinion, I'm not trying to pass anything as fact. I never once said 'as so and so stated/reported' it is all based on speculation and everything else I have read. All I'm saying is that I feel Xbox has exclusives that are much weightier than Sony's.
Also, in regards to this, "Why is Halo and the "other" (what others?) Xbox exclusives enough to put it over Sony's games? Gran Turismo? Final Fantasy? Grand Theft Auto? Those games ring a bell? How about Nintendo's reign with Mario, Zelda, Metroid and others?" --- if you would have taken two seconds to read what I said you would have seen this "Xbox has Halo and other exclusives over Sony " yes thats right, I said over Sony. I dealt with The Nintendo Revolution later in my opinion. And, GTA is NOT an exclusive, it had a much earlier release date but last I checked it was available for the Xbox. Exclusive means available only on one, perhaps you've heard this term used before?

As far as media, this is more opinion again but look at the new Mortal Kombat game. The videos in it are noticably of worse quality than those on the other two systems and it is obviously due to the lack of storage space. And, in my opinion, that is probably one of the reasons that it took so long to get MK over here- lack of fanbase being the main reason but I think trying to cram everything onto the disc had something to do with it.
And yes, I know that some developers did fantastic with the storage space of the disc, that is totally unrelated to my discussion. Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time all fit onto a cartridge but that doesn't make cartridges as good as the CD's being used by the PlayStation. Certainly some teams can fit some good games onto the <2 gb discs used by Gamecube but you think they wouldn't rather have 4.7? Or that they couldn't do more with 4.7? Even if they did something as simple as add about 100 more songs onto the soundtrack of EA Sports games it would be worth it.

Retrospectively, all I did was come on here to give my opinion and my take on the situation. I never said it was fact and I didn't mean for it to come off that way. I haven't posted on a BB in a long time and I thought it would be fun to see what you all had to say about me thinking the Nextbox would have the biggest advantages over the others- not try and make yourself feel good by saying I'm trying to pass this as fact.

As far as the PS3 to Nextbox specs go, that is based on stuff I read and speculation I read- I don't know this for a fact but from what I saw it looks as though Nextbox will be more powerful and therefore that gives the Microsoft team a leg up. Asking for screenshots as opposed to asking for explanation is a little childish, don't you think?

And yes I understand that the PlayStation library is much more than everyone elses; that is one of the keys to their success but I think that with the next system generation the Xbox exclusives will grow stronger and games like Gran Turismo aren't going to be the heavyweight sellers as other companies are learning how to make racing games just like that. But, once again, that's opinion.

If GTA is not an exclusive, neither is Halo. Halo got ported to PC later remember? Getting a late port is no substitute for getting an actual release. Throw in Metal Gear Solid and Devil May Cry as other Sony exclusives that Microsoft would love to sell.

That is very true.. I must say I hadn't considered some of the other heavyweights Sony is touting. Metal Gear is HUGE. On the exclusives front I do believe my microsoft to sony comparison is busted. I still think PlayStation will fizzle out a bit this next gen (only a bit though because their pre-existing user base is so enormous and backwards compatibility keep those people on board)
