well, what you do is host a big server, say with 30 slots(ouch bandwith lol)
and then you actually charge people to admin it, say 4 bucks a month, and get like 15 guys to do it. i think that's what dave wants, but if not it always works

i used to do something like that but it ended up people started not paying so thus we were paying 60 a month for a 24 slot server, and only taking in about 50 bucks..so yea...have fun!

What kind of internet connection do you have?

To host a server you need a synchronous internet connection. The upload & download speed need to be the same, and at least T1 speeds (1.5Mbps up AND down). Otherwise you'll lag out.

If you were planning on hosting it off of a brodband connection, it just won't work. Even with Comcast at 4Mbps download, the upload is still capped at 384k, which is just about enough for a 2-4 player game.

nothing is free and easy. to host a good server that people will pay for you have to spend some cash. instead of a server, how about you take that cash and invest it at Sylvan Learning Center so that they can teach you to write properly.

ok, so we have dsl now and our download and upload speeds are not close, its about 1.2mbs download, and 205kbs upload, our friend in NY set up one (CS server) off his regular cable service, and his up and down are only 300kbs X 1.7mbs and there is no lagging at all (out of all 16 players). How is this posible?

I'm VERRY PATIENT, it took my friend 2 years lol!

you could always buy a 2nd dsl line, and then use that.
and how do the people hosting the 24 slot servers make money? some of them buy like dual opterons and charge 50 a month. can you host multiple servers one 1 computer?

Were you playing locally at his place, or connecting remotely from the interet? There will never be any lag locally.
Give it a try on your connection & see what your response time is like. Set up an open server, let some players connect & keep an eye on their ping times. Best case would be to have someone you know connecting over the inernet somewhere so they can let you know if it's lagging.

2nd DSL line will have the same problem. You need SDSL (synchronous DSL) to increase the upstream bandwidth. You'll also need a static IP address since you don't want your server address to change if you ever reboot your modem.

Yes, you can host multiple games on 1 computer, but you'll probably now need multiple static IP addresses to differentiate the games.

so you have one computer be a dedicated server, always keeping it on, which runs ur electriciy bill up, and the its basically like a server..on your ip...so if you want to play on your own server, you have to use a different computer and different IP as well. ...yea...
