Thanks for keeping the reviews coming guys and gals! Being on the road as much as I am, Netflix is pretty much covering my movie needs. That, and with my new laptop I can burn myself a copy of it if I like it or don't have time to watch it right away.

OK, time to catch up on a few DVD reviews.

It's a few months late, but I must agree with Paniolo about Date Movie. It sucked. There were a few funny parts (like the cat on the crapper), but overall I wasn't impressed. They did not push the envelope nearly as much as I expected (like they did in Scary Movie 1 & 2). I'm glad I listened to you guys and didn't see it in theaters.

Grandma's Boy also sucked. It had it's good moments (like the line "Drink from my man faucet"), but overall was a dissapointment. Dirty Love was terrible. Jenny McCarthy could have done much better. It was depressing. Carmen Electra even managed to suck, and she is at least good do look at in her other movies.

And, finally, Who's Your Daddy? was just all right. It was basically the same as Mr. Deeds only this guy inherets a porn empire.

    Cars

Was anyone waiting for this review?

I saw the previews and figured it would be an animated version of something like Herbie the Love Bug.

The story is about a young, arrogant racecar (all characters are cars, even the bugs!) While being moved cross-country to a race in California, he manages to fall out of the back (through some reasonably believable events) while he's sleeping during the evening transport. When he wakes up a moment later, he goes in search of his truck transport and gets lost along famous Route 66. While running from a cop, he almost destroys a small town, gets caught and ends up in the impound lot. He wakes up the next morning anxious to go on his way to the race but instead is locked down until he cleans up the mess he created. Along the way he creates some friendships with the townfolk before heading on his way to the big race.

The movie has incredible animation, about as realistic as you could get in a cartoon, with almost 3D cars and great background scenery. It starts with a lot of action and kept my interest the entire movie. The storyline was good, and there was plenty of light humor that kept everyone laughing. I was totally impressed with the whole movie. I think anyone with a kid in your soul will LOVE this movie.

This gets one of my few A+ recommendation. Pixar did a great job and threw in lots of gratuitous fun during the credits, poking fun at some of its previous success, like "Toy Car Story" where all of the characters are from Toy Story but are cars, etc. A great final touch.

    The Lake House

The Lake House is about a man in the construction industry living in 2004 who discovers a note in his mailbox from the previous owner, a woman asking that mail be forwarded to a new address. The note contains an address and a message about a box in the attic and dog footprints on the gangway to the house, which the man cannot find.

Since he sees no footprints or box, he is confused and puts a little note back in the mailbox for the postman to take to her. After a strange response about this being "2006" he sends another message that leads to a dialog. He decides to go investigate the address and finds that it is a condo complex under construction.

Eventually they both realize that the mailbox is a strange portal in time and they start looking into ways to meet each other, either "in the past" or "in the future".

The movie is definitely for the romantic in people, had some very good imagery, very good acting, and a script that flowed very well in spite of the time anomoly. The only place it really fell apart was at the end where they tried to meet a few days after she receives the initial letter and the movie jumped around in time, leaving me wondering if they were showing the past or the future. However, that little bit had little impact on the movie.

I'd rank it a solid A-. Definitely bring a date.

I saw it too-and liked it. It is difficult to make the TIME-WARP thing work-as dogop says it gets a little muddled-but actually was done pretty well. My thumb up!!

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm not hearing good things. I like Adam Sandler, though, so I'll probably see it today and report back to you guys.

I saw Cars last weekend and pretty much agree with dogopoly's review. I was skeptical based on the previews, but this movie delivered -- A+ in my books.

I know two people who saw it and they both said there was a lot of potty humor but it was still pretty funny...maybe one of sandler's best to date.

Ok...Click was a little unexpected for me.

I thought it was really funny...but then I'm a little immature and think potty humor is pretty funny. The thing that did catch me by surprise was that the movie actually had a message to it. I didn't think it would because most of Sandler's movie don't.

He did a pretty good job at the parts he had when he had to act a little more dramaticly, but it was a little overdone.

Overall, I would give the movie an A-. It's one of the better movies I've seen and I'm definately going to get this on DVD when it comes out.

I too was impressed by Click. I won't give away the ending, but I enjoyed it. If they had ended the movie 15 minutes earlier (you that have seen it know what I mean), I would have given it a C and been dissappointed, but as it is, I will also give it an A-. I don't recall that much potty humor, and there was no sex in it. It was kinda like a cross between Butterfly Effect and Mr. Destiny.

One thing I found interesting was the fact that he couldn't rewind his life and change stuff. If he could have, it might have ended like Butterfly Effect, which I did not like (the ending). Whoever they got to play Sandler's wife was smokin hot! Anyone else notice that Sandler's characters seem to have "performance issues?" See Click, 50 First Dates, & Spanglish to a lesser extent...

I made it a Ben-Made 2X Feature and saw "The Break-Up" as well. It was great! Seeing Jennifer Anuston's butt didn't hurt either... It was a mostly clean movie that was very funny in parts, but also had enough drama to counter the comedy and make for an enjoyable movie. I was also pleased with the ending of this one. Vince Vaugh was his normal funny self, but his haircut looked dumb. Just my observation.

    Superman Returns

    Superman Returns

Apparently, after the people from Earth discovered a planet that seemed to have been Krypton (Superman's birth planet) he takes off to see if there's anything useful, but it's all gone so he returns.

Meanwhile, Lex Luther, Superman's archrival, has been released from prison, acquired some money and used it to travel to Superman's santuary to get some crystals that have super powers. He uses them to devise a plan to take over the world.

Back in Metropolis, Superman's return is graciously welcomed by all except Lois Lane, his former love interest, who's now living with a guy and has a son.

When Luther's plans starts coming to fruition, Superman must figure out how to save the world.

    --
The movie started a bit slowly, ended a bit slowly and really didn't have much suspense in the middle. The actors seemed to have been miscast and I never believed that ANYTHING ever happened between Superman and Lois; Lex was more mean that devious; and everyone was just a bit too "stepford wife". The fashion and decor was from the mid 20th century, but the technology was from the 21st century. It's like they couldn't decide which era to portray. The love scenes were ho-hum, and the action, while good, was always over-dramatized.

The only thing holding this together was a good story line with so much untapped potential.

I was disappointed (but only a little) and give it a very weak B. Kids may enjoy the action, but there were enough slow parts that they may get bored, and so might you. Probably best for video, but maybe a matinee.

SUPERMAN RETURNS-I actually liked it more than dogop-thought it was on the scale of Batman Returns-I'd give it a B+ or A- . thought it WAS suspenseful in the middle-but it DID start slow.
    It's the POINT

OK...it WAS suspenseful in the middle, but it just seemed to pass too quickly or too dramatically, and a lot of what happened was TOO predictable.

Also, the credits at the beginning looked SOOOO '80s.

I just felt like they were trying to recreate the original Christopher Reeve Superman I with a different storyline, but without the chemistry of the actors.

I just heard that the latest Superman movie cost over $300 Million to make and market. That makes it the most expensive movie ever. We'll see if it makes it back. I'm sure it will, but I'm not sure how much higher than that it will soar.

    Devil Wears Prada

This movie was about a girl (Anne HAthaway), just out of college, trying to be a writer in NY, can 't find a job and is set up for an interview as a "gopher" for a big-shot fashion designer (Meryl Streep.)

The girl knows really nothing about fashion but she's hired mainly because she's fresh. However, that doesn't last long and she has to learn the trade or get out. So she starts to dress the part and play the part. But in doing so, she's losing her friends and boyfriend.

Will she choose the life of glamour or will she return to the friends who love her?

    --
The music in this movie was great, the acting was quite good and the whole storyline moved along at a perfect pace.
Although this is definitely a chick-flick, I'll venture to recommend it to guys too for the eye candy (just go incognito)

The only thing unbelievable was that all of these cutthroat people were pretty nice to each other, so instead of A+ I'm going to crank it down to a solid A.

I guess they're spending a butt-load of money (~$95 Million) to market the film. Yowsiers that's a lot of TV and billboard ads! The tv reporter I was watching definitely said "make and market."

I think Pirates 2 will be very problematic for The Man of Steel (opening within 9 days or so). They were saying that the long holiday weekend (for many folks, including me for a change!) may actually hurt Superman's #s because so many people may be traveling over the long weekend instead of staying home and barbequing/going to the movies. I would expect it to gross $100 Million in the first 5 days, but fromn there on, it's success or failure will be determined by word of mouth.

    THE LAKE HOUSE:

I'm 2 weeks behind you guys, but I will also give The Lake House an A-. I saw it tonight with my mom (don't have anyone else to see it with this minute and I try not to see chick flicks by myself) and we both enjoyed it.

    An Inconvenient Truth = A+

Even as an environmentalist, I was a little worried that this movie would be boring. But it was absolutely amazing! Really fascinating information about global warming presented by Al Gore, who has dedicated his life to getting this message out. I wept more than once. The graphics present the truth irrefutably.
