I give it a B-
I never read the book or remember watching it on TV so I can say I'm not bias one way or the other really. To me I didn't feel the urgency or feel the situation was that dire. It was too simple for me and I think the acting could have been better. I think if the scenes were longer I would enjoy it but to me everything seemed cut together instead of transitioning. It was like someone made a movie based on the cliff notes of the cliff notes of the book instead of the actual book. Still enjoyable I guess.
Brokeback Mountain: C
Overall not too bad of a movie but it's REALLY slow at times. Great acting and I thought it set the right tone. Not focused too much on the gay physical scenes, just enough to make it intense. But I couldn't get past how slow the movie moved at times. I definitely wouldn't pay to see it but I would rent it on DVD.
From your description, it sounds like a "chick flick" !Originally Posted by sixpac shakur

I'm always hesitant to do so, because everyone has their own 'taste' in movies. But just because you asked Dogop, I'll venture to say that probably almost anyone might find this entertaining at some level. It's also got a Family/Holiday theme, so it's a good one to see at this time of year. And it's not a loooong movie, like so many of the ones out right now![]()
Cool...I'm hoping to see it this weekend, and it sounds like it'll be worthwhile.Originally Posted by Paniolo

This is the story of a little Japanese girl sold by family to a Geisha house (essentially an upper class entertainment house.) Due to the fact that she is constantly at odds with being ripped from her sister's arms, and the fact that a household prima donna Geisha feels threatened by her, she becomes more of a liability than the household feels they can recoup by investing in her Geisha future so they keep her as a slave. Eventually another Geisha house decides to buy her and her life is transformed as she becomes a top Geisha girl and learns how to deal with the prima donna who continues to try to undermine her career while she searches for her "sugar daddy" to give her a comfortable life.
The story was rather slow-moving at first, presumably trying to teach you about the culture. It never really picks up much steam but has bits and pieces of interesting story, especially the girl's interesting wit.
I feel that much of the story was left in the book (which I never read) and therefore left for a lot of confusion about what was happening at any given time. Also, the heavy Japanese accents often made it difficult to understand the dialog.
I was hoping for a bit more. I give it a C+: worthy of renting on a lazy rainy Saturday.

Get the book, Dogo. It's an excellent read!
It may very well be, but the movie should not depend on the book to be good. Apparently Hitchhikers was like this. I read the book and really related to the movie but others told me they were totally lost. Oh well.Originally Posted by sixpac shakur

Jack was there throwing out VIP Code Monkeys. Special thanks to the girl in front of me who let me have the one that landed on her shoulder. I love my Monkey, will play with with my Monkey and will display my Monkey proudly in public. (And if that girl wants a special get-together with my Monkey, please let me know.)

I will just give my status of the movies...since all of you have written such good reviews on all the movies.... A friend of mine has bought all the tapes of King Kong and very happy with them all off of Amazon...
KING KONG
I rated this movie a B+
FAMILY STONE
I really enjoyed this family movie...and some places could be tear jerking.
I rated this movie a A+
MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA
If you have read the book, this movie has alot of meaning....both were good...
I rated this movie as a B+
Hope everyone enjoyed their movies of the week...more to come for next week....get your tickets....

Inside me lives a skinny woman crying to get out. But I can usually shut her up with cookies. (Chocolate Chips will do)
MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA = B+ = Beautiful music/soundtrack, cinematography, & good portrayal of this time period in Japan's culture/customs/lifestyle.
Starting Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Coster, Shirley McLaine
The story of a confused girl originally from Pasadena who just got engaged to her lawyer boyfriend in New York and she doesn't know why she said yes (but doesn't necessarily want to change her mind.)
After flying in for her sister's wedding, she learns that her mother (who passed away when she was 9) and grandma may have been the women that inspired the story "The Graduate." When she also learns that she was born 8 months and 1 week after her parent were married, she goes out to discover whether the other guy is her dad.
The story was rather interesting, with just the right amount of mystery and anticipation. The characters were interesting, not overwhelming, and not too low key but maybe not quite interesting enough. It wasn't really a chick flick but more of a story of discovery.
It wasn't great, but I rather enjoyed it overall. I'll give it a strong B.

Shirley McLaine 'steals' this movie away from the others![]()

Chronicles of Narnia: B- (Really not as good as it should have been, but see it on the big screen anyway. Bring your kids.)
Memoirs of a Geisha: A+ (So much better than I hoped! We are going back to see it again at full price at least once and will end up buying the DVD!)
This was a typical "inspirational" film like those from the 80s.
The Baker family of 12 is starting to drift its separate ways so dad decides to have one last get-together at the lake where they had so many memories years ago. While there, dad gets very competetive with an old rival and they decide to get their families to compete in the annual lake decathlon...but dad Baker's family decides to bail on him...you can almost guess what happens, but there are some twists.
Overall, this is a good family film, with a decent (albeit someone forced) storyline and some decent acting. However, it seems like the director just had to make sure that every person had a storyline and in doing so created a scattering of mostly unrelated skits. Still good for the family but overall I'd give it a C+.

Went to see King Kong today, and I quite liked it. The movie takes a bit to really get going (about 45 minutes or so), but once it does, it takes you for a ride (basically once they get on the island). The ending was a bit drawn out too (but at least they kept the most famous line at the end).
B+ in my books (mostly due to length).
I agree 100% with Paniolo's review of Fun With Dick & Jane. B- to B is what I walked away thinking. It was funny in parts and worth seeing, but I expected more. Probably a good matinee.
I also saw the last 1.75 hours of The Family Stone. I'm sure I missed a lot of important back story, but I think I got the gist of it. It was kinda depressing with one hilarious scene in the kitchen near the end. I won't rate it cause I only saw 3/4 of it.
Let Your Freak Flag Fly, Real Real High!
Anyone seen brokenback mountain? Gues its up for lots of awards. I give it an A-. Actually great movie, and good story, I enjoyed it.
Also so Dick and Jane. Kinda of Lame, not the best movie, i give it a C.
Family stone i give a B+, some sad and funny scenes.
Chronicles of Narnia: A+ all the way! They stayed VERY true to the book and did a magnificent job with the whole thing!
I saw a lot of similarities to Lord of the Rings. This surprised me. For instance, Susan's horn is just like Baromir's (sic). Tolkein & C.S. Lewis were friends you know...
And there were the Christian allegories that I have known about for a long time. A Must See!
Let Your Freak Flag Fly, Real Real High!
Finally got to see this.
It was a very realistic-seeming movie about a guy with a very liberal famil in MA who brings back (for Christmas) a very proper girl that he wants to ask to marry him. The family sees her as not the right girl for him and goes about sabotaging the relationship in a fun-sorta way, and she gets upset rather than realizing that they're teasing her.
The acting and scenery were very good, but I kept expecting a lot of the scenes to bring much more humor than they did. Some of the endings were predictable, but that didn't seem to make it better or worse.
Overall, I'd say that this would make a great Hallmark Channel movie, but I came away feeling like something was missing. B-

My Reasoning:
Great action/adventure
Awesome special effects (Andy Serkis of Golem fame plays Kong here)
Peter Jackson fans got another epic storytelling saga true to his style
Great storytelling throughout
Great character development, casting, & portrayals-Jack Black is perfect, "The Ring" actress was superb, and the audience can empathize & have compassion for Kong, the supporting actors were good too (diversity w/a strong African-American role, a bit part for the China man, the Euro-captain, etc.)
Got your $$$ worth w/a full three hours
If you're a Lord of the Rings fan, you'll like this
However, what really "spoiled" the movie was the one scene. You all know what I'm talking about (for those of you who saw it already)! Ugh! Sooo many laughs & guffaws from the audience. Yeah, I was snorting to myself, but the others didn't have to spoil the scene for everyone else, puh-lease!
Overall, ya gotta see it on the BIG SCREEN. Not the same watching it on the tube. Not an Academy Award winner, but what do you expect from a re-make?
Grandma's boy-
FUnny movie, better then I thought it was be. The plot could have been alittle better, but some very funny scenes. I give this movie a B.
