Question How long does your average traffic stop take?

Let's say I get pulled over for tailgating on the freeway. There we are, our two vehicles, parked on the shoulder of the freeway. How long does it usually take the cop to do what he needs to do and give me my ticket so I can be on my way? Any time differences between a freeway stop and a city street stop?

I'd say about 15 minutes. He runs all the information and then writes up the ticket. And he is in no hurry whatsoever.

15-20 depending on dispatch computers, etc. Safty is a concern as well, I liked to get my biz done on the highway and get back at it. I spent the last 3 years as a big ole TARGET on the side of the road. I swear sometimes I didn't know how the mirrors weren't ripped off by a passing vehicle. People don't respect the get the hell over lights/arrows etc.

i think city stops tend to take longer. i don't know why. perhaps it is the fact that freeways are more dangerous and cops want to get off the shoulder. it also seems like, from my experience in LA, that searches happen more often on city stops than highway stops. but that is a very unscientific survey of traffic stops that I've seen while driving by.

I would tend to agree with you BM. I think the reason is the the CHP writes tickets all day long. What else do they do? When you do it that much you tend to get better and quicker at it. And ticket writing is their job. I think they tend to be a little more into it. The local Barney Fifes tend to be a little more pissed that they were stuck with traffic duty that week and it shows in their efficency. Just a theory.

    a warning takes less tha 5min... a tiket takes 10 to 15min.

i'm sure it all depends on how fast dispatch is to get back with the unit if they dont have a computer in their car (they dont around here).
