Thread: USB Flash Drive

    USB Flash Drive

I have an integral 128mb USB 2.0 flash drive. It's nothing flash (like the pun? ) or expensive but it's really handy for just getting stuff from work to home if I need to. Recently it's been giving me loads of problems. It just comes up on all computers as a floppy drive and I can't access anything on it or save anything to it. I've tried mapping a different letter to it but I can't think of anything else I can do?

Thanks in advance for any help, would be great if I could access what is on there and save to it again!

Do you make sure to "properly Unplug or Eject Hardware" everytime you remove it?

If not... then you've probably FUBARed the file system of the drive.

Always be sure to clicky the nice eject button on your system tray.

On XP usually, I tried installing the drivers anyway but this didn't work either. I always stop the hardware, well to my knowledge I always have anyway. I haven't ever intentionally just pulled it out. Any suggestions? Thanks for replying.

Sorry the OS I use is XP, at work it is XP on all apart from 1 computer, which is 2000. Should of been a bit clearer.

how old is it? it may be time for a replacement. and i'm with DF, if you pull it out without stopping it even once you can jack it up. it doesn't ruin it everytime, but it only takes one time to screw it up.

Had it since just before Christmas, what sort of lifetime do they have? Would you recommend getting a new 1 with the age it's at?

Might want to try deleting the hardware drivers / files from the system files in Windows. Not sure what they would be labeled, but that would be my next try.

I suggest you try formatting it if you're able to. That may fix any corruption on it.

Sitting here with card ready to buy a new one. Any suggestions? I'm after either a 128mb or 256mb, I don't need a 256mb stick really, but if there is a decent 1 around for not much more than the 128mb price then I'll go for it. I've read a lot of reviews of 'cheaper' models having the same problem as mine, so if anyone knows where a decent brand name model is I'd appreciate it.

I've looked on Amazon and Dabs so far, nothing really stands out. Would preferably like to get it from a UK based site as I'm looking to get it by the latest Thursday morning if possible. Thanks for any help.

I trust Lexar myself... their JumpDrive Pros are nice.

But honestly, I know that you say you don't need more than 128mb today... but with the price of these coming down, the bigger ones are definitely a better value due to the smaller ones nearing the "cost of production". Personally, I have a 1 GB version that I paid $50 for... however a 256Mb version might cost $30... I got more than 4x the space for less than double the cost.

Check out Amazon.com they have some nice deals on these from time to time.
