Thumbs up The Dark Lord is Coming!

For those who don't know, Friday April 29th was the release date for Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout at Three Floyds Brewing Co. in Munster, Indiana. This beer is the best beer I have ever had (yes, it's that good) and is very, very, very hard to get. The numbers vary, but this year they only bottled 850 to 1500 bottles depending on who you ask and it is only sold at the brewery. All of it was gone from the brewery by Saturday. But with a huge stroke of luck I found a liquor store in Chicago that went to brewery and bought a few cases of Dark Lord to sell to folks who couldn't be there. And they agreed to ship me 4 bottles of this amazing brew! 4 bottles!

The 3Floyds website is kind of late since they don't even have the release date up there, but you can read more about the beer here:

    http://www.threefloyds.com/dspDarkLord.html

Here's the wonderful liquor store who gets mad respect from me for sharing the love and being really cool to talk to:

    http://www.geocities.com/archerliquo..._dark_lord.htm

And of course a look at the BeerAdvocate top 100 shows that the Dark Lord is #2. A fine brew is on it's way to me. I can't wait until Thursday!

Oh, and DF, you're off the hook since I found this liquor store to hook me up!

Is it really that good or is it just the "limited edition" has you so worked up?
My friends brewed some beer and I think they 30 or 40 bottles out of it. I drank 1 or 2 bottles of the ultra limited edition and it was great.

Heh... I didn't even realize I was "on the hook" in the first place I passed you off to Markel... cause he's closer to it than I am.

it's really that good. there are plenty of limited edition beers each year that could fall off the shelf and I wouldn't care. i am worked up because this is such a great beer. true, if I could get it everyday of the year it wouldn't be such an event but there is only 1 beer that I ALWAYS keep in my fridge, and that is Speedway Stout from Alesmith which is available year round. If Dark Lord were available year round here in CA, it would always be in my fridge as well. Yes, it's that good.

i'll gladly taste any homebrews. i've never really gotten into homebrewing because i'd rather buy good stuff than brew my own crappy stuff. it is a very shortsighted view of things since I would probably brew good beers after a while.

    he said Guinness!

well, Guinness might be it's one-legged, red-headed stepchild. Dark Lord is an American Double Stout or a Russian Imperial Stout (they are very similiar styles) which means it's dark and thick and yummy. Dark Lord is also 13% ABV. By contrast, Guinness is an Irish Dry Stout which is a thin and dry ale. Guinness is weak sauce, especially when compared to the Dark Lord.

You're local jel so go down to a specialty beer retailer (Bev Mo will do in this case) and buy yourself a bottle of Speedway Stout from Alesmith (SanDiego). It will set you back $10-$12 for a 750 ml bottle (wine bottle size) but it is well worth it. That is in the same vein as Dark Lord, but honestly it's not the same or close. That's what makes Dark Lord so special. DL is made with Starbucks coffee, molasses, honey, and a huge grain bill. It is simply unmatched by any other beer out there.

Bev Mo actually has a great selection of local and national and some international beers. for a chain they get mad respect from me (along with Whole Foods). My only beef with them is that a lot of their beers go un-refrigerated.

So it would be a good place to try out some "lesser known" beers?

in fact it would be an excellent place to try lesser known beers. if you need some recommendations just shoot me an PM.

incidently, I will be at the Bev Mo near my office picking up my Stone Vertical Epic 05.05.05 today. It's released every year when the day, month, and year are the same. It started in 2002 with the 02.02.02. Cheers!

Heh... proving yet again that you are the ULTIMATE G|A authority on beer.

It takes a REAL "beer geek" to buy a beer that only comes out only one day a year.

Well, it is available until supplies run out, but it is released today. It will probably be available for at least a month.

This is going to be a fun beer weekend. Dark Lord, Brian Boru, Robert the Bruce, Stone 05.05.05, and whatever else I pick up at Bev Mo today. God have mercy on my wallet, it's gonna take a beating this week.
