When a mouse is not just a mouse....

So I caved in and bought the new supermouse from Logitech.

I haven't seen a review from GA lately. Maybe I missed news for a day or so. Anyways, here's a very informal rookie-esq review.

I remember when I thought $10 was too much for a mouse. I still have my MS optical that I got for a couple of bucks from a few years ago.

Anyways, I wanted a clutter free desk a while back, so I picked up an MX duo and liked it so much that I grabbed a 2nd set for my other rig. Now function is becoming more important than cord free and I went back to my wired lt kb and grabbed the MX518. I had $15 Amazon GC that expired that day and I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype, so I ordered it with a book and a THISisAMERCANA cd($2).

I just plugged it in and it's pretty light next to the my MX700 (batteries). It is by far the smoothest mouse I have ever used. I still have my trusty MS optical plugged in and that feels sluggish and less precise and that's only while clicking through webpages. I haven't messed with the dpi or installed the sw yet, but so far the MX518 feels pretty nice.


The Good:
Same shape/size as the MX700.
Lighter than the MX700.
You can adjust the DPI (sensitivity) on the fly.
Buttons, lots of them.
Funky grey and black swirl coloring.
Widescreen friendly (quick for side to side).


The Bad:
$50 for a corded mouse?
Corded.
Same shape/size as the MX700

Maybe too light.
Even with my $15 gc, I just paid $35 for something I used to get for free.
I don't like LT SW (personal problem).
Not for lefties. I haven't seen one yet at least.

Instant Impression:
It's still just a mouse... Maybe just a little better mouse. Great for gaming if it fits your hand. I need to try some doom later, but will probably play some GW with Cant instead. MS mouse is being retired as we speak, but that was a given. Don't know if I want to install their sw yet. Will post if I do.

I definitely agree. Wireless mice are very quirky. I have owned several wireless mice, and I always end up going back to a corded one.

What wireless mice have you owned? My mx700 was just as good as my old ms optical and you get used to the extra weight.

Honestly, I guess I just prefer corded mice to cordless... I don't wanna have to remember to recharge the dayuum thing (or change the batteries... whatever the case may be)

Recharging is no big deal on the Logitechs. Just plop it in the charger base every once in a while and you're good to go. I got myself the laser optical after the charger on my MX700 died. I love it, though I haven't used it in the last month or so being so damn far away from my desktop system.

Good little review jel. I love Logitechs as well, and also agree that their drivers and software could use some streamlining and improvements. I want to get the DiNovo bluetooth set but can't rationalize spending that much money for just a keyboard and mouse set, that really won't be much different from a regular RF set.

If a cordless mouse is too heavy for you maybe it is time to get away from the computer and exercise a little! I have a corded mouse at work and hate it. I feel like I'm always tugging for more slack.

I have an MX700 cordless here at work since the normal Dell mice *suck*. I really like the extra weight of the MX700, the little "twitches" that influence the mouse are greatly reduced, you have to be more comitted to the movement, thus I think its a bit smoother to use.

I went from a MX700 to a MX1000 and it was worth it. The battery meter on the side is a nice feature. Plus it will go a week between chargings.

I don't really buy expensive corded mice so I like my Logitech cordless optical mouse. One day I might upgrade to the laser cordless mouse. I like Logitech mouse better than M$.

Obviously, we aren't having the same problem. My cord never feels like a problem to me. Maybe you should be hittin' the gym yourself if the cord is "that strong" to you.

sweet... so would u recommend it? i have actually been looking into getting it these past couple days for my g5. i hardly game and if i do game, it's only cs since thats pretty much the only game my old rig can handle. i want it for the mac because i find the mac mouse to be a bit sluggish even after adjusting the speed. i've found all mac mice to be like that. so i want this new one for my design stuff since the mac is quicker than the pc, but the slow mouse bothers me.

so was it worth the buy???

aww... i just noticed on the site that the 518 doesnt say mac in their list, but the rest do.... laaaame. think it'll still work?

Like you like to say man, different strokes for different folks. My first reasoning when I first purchased a cordless mouse was to reduce the cluttered wiring. But that didn't really change. However, I really can't stand corded mice anymore. It's not about not having the strength to tug at the stinkin cord, but the fact that we have to tug at it in the first place. It worse with the stinking laptop mini mouse with the freaking short ass cords. I can't wait to use my MX1000 again. I love the battery meter too, beats staring at the glowing dot on the MX700 to figure out if you need a charge anytime soon.

I still use an MX Duo (MX700 Wireless) on my web browsing/itunes-musicbox/etc. rig. I still like my MX700 a lot.

The new mouse is for my gaming rig and it is the most precise mouse I've used. I still haven't adjusted the "preciseness" so I a confident that I will become more comfortable with it as time goes on. In FPS games, people can change settings for sniping and for fast movement, etc. on the fly. This is also good for me because of my widescreen. I hate picking up the mouse and when I get better at using it, I'll be able to do something simple like go from one end of the screen to the other without having to move the mouse very far.

Would I recommend this for the average person or gamer? Yes and no. If I didn't have the ws, I wouldn't have cared as much about the adjustable dpi. Seems like it shouldn't be a big deal, but it comes up every so often and does irritate me. Might be good for cad users. Good for most any 1337 FPS gamer. More control = better player or so I was told. Real 1337 gamers can get it done with a trackball mouse, but I digress.

For most people, I would recommend the cordless MX1000. If they are looking for a change from their current mouse, this is a good choice. It's around $10 more and still on list of things that I might pick up. The movement is better than the MX700 and the battery indicator and long batt life make it an almost perfect product. The only thing someone could want is different sized shells for different sized hands and shells for lefties.

Dad whipped out a BFG Boomslang 2100 for me. that thing is so amazing and so comefortable, and has a dpi of 2100, i believe is 2nd only to the mx1000. keep im mind this is a ball mouse though, so some of you may be turned off. i think it's pretty sweet though, and it's helped me to utalize my middle finger on the scroll, so i never take my finger off the trigger

I had a Boomslang for the longest.... until I replaced it with the MX500..

I love it back in the Windows 98 days... but then they virtually went bankrupt and for months were pretty much "down and out".... It too SOOOO long for Razer to create Windows XP drivers that I finally gave up on it.

Yes... the Boomslang is good... however I don't miss cleaning the grease and dirt off of the ball. I think they have a new optical mouse as well.... however the way they did us with the original Boomslang 1000s and 2000s really left some hard feelings towards their products and service.

The MS one is $149 for a keyboard/mouse set, and the logitech mouse if $100 by itself. I ended up with teh apple keyboard and mouse (crappy 1 button). Now I can sit on my couch and browse on my TV.

The logitech wireless has never given me a problem as long as I placed the base in view of the mouse. Their RF technology is much faster than bluetooth also.

i like a clean look, so i dont want something else next to my computer. the dvd burner needs to go, but i need an internal one before i get rid of it.

I have never seen a speed comparison between bluetooth and nonbluetooth wireless mice. Another disadvantage is the limited distance of nonbluetooth.
