San Diego Pirate Station "Free Radio 96.9" Shut Down
The FCC and federal marshals raid a three-year-old pirate operation in San Diego.
"Free Radio 96.9" also operated a very public website named www.pirate969.org - and the Union Tribune says that's also silent, following Thursday's seizure of equipment and transmitter. Founder "Bob Ugly" vows to return to the air soon and says "we went on the air illegally because it was impossible to get a license." Inside Radio says - try telling the local police that you built a house on an illegal lot because you couldn't get the proper permits. There are still hundreds of active pirates on the air across the U.S. despite the FCC's stepped-up enforcement.
