Question Mac G5 memory upgrading - regular PC ram OK?

I plead ignorance. I'm sure Ribitch will help.

I use a G5 Mac at work and it runs sorta slow. Granted, it's the lowest clock G5 they sell (or sold - they don't even sell it anymore) @ 1.8, but the ram is seriously lagging behind...256mb. I know, I know...I didn't buy it or I would've upgraded it.

I want to try to talk my bosses into buying more ram for it (probably a gig), it *looks to me* like the Corsair I bought for my PC will work here as well (2x512 ValueSelect PC3200) but since I don't know, I figured I'd ask you all 'cause I'm sure someone on here knows. Hopefully the fact that this is Dual Channel ram won't matter either...if it doesn't help that's ok but if it hurts or degrades anything then maybe I should get something else?

One of the reviews is from someone who popped it into a dual 2gig G5 so I figure it'll work for me also but I wanted to make absolutely sure 'cause I don't want to look like a tool if my bosses order the ram and it doesn't work. They already think I'm a computer tech geek god and I like my pedestal. j/k

    Any help is much appreciated.

if there's any question from your boss, go to www.corsair.com and they have a RAM selector in the middle of the page. You just select the manufacturer and model and they'll tell you which RAM is compatible. Your G5 1.8 is in there.

Yeah, I checked that yesterday after I posted this message; it gave me a System Select RAM choice but didn't say anything about the ValueSelect. For all intents and purposes it looks like they're exactly the same (the ones I've been recommended not only from them but also Crucial)...same speed (DDR400 ie 3200), same everything the only difference is that the ones I plan on ordering (the VS) are a 2.5 latency meanwhile the recommended ones are 3...AFAIK (in my limited ram expertise) the lower the latency the better so I'm surprised 2.5s weren't recommended in favor of 3s.

Again though, I saw several reviews on NewEgg from PowerMac G5 owners who used the ram with no problems (saying it passed Apple's hardware check, etc). I still can't believe how much Apple butchers their hardware prices...$250 for a 1gig upgrade...sheesh.

If you check all PC manufacturers, you'll see they do the same thing. IBM wanted like $300-500 for a 1GB Ram upgrade.

They figure they can charge those prices because people don't know how to add ram...
