If you're running Windows XP, go to your Display Properties, and then Appearance, click Effects, and choose ClearType under Font Smoothing and it helps with the way LCDs display text (makes it easier to read). Sorta makes it blurry but somehow it works well.

I don't know if there's really any other customization options...if you have Photoshop installed you can run the Adobe Gamma control panel plugin. I think that's about it. Most people run LCDs at 1280x1024 and I think usually the refresh rate is 85.

After you enable ClearType, visit Microsoft's ClearType Tuner to tweak it and make it look even better.

Note: Some people dont use cleartype.
Resolution should be naturally set if you are using DVI.

Well that's really easy, plug it in and it auto-detects and works.

Well. Yes. But I was replying to zero2dash who suggested turning it on.

But on a halfway decent LCD, I can't imagine not using ClearType if you deal with a lot of text. Though on Dell 15" LCDs it looks positively awful.

OSX also lets you turn on Clear Type (although it's called "Font Smoothing"); it's under System Preferences -> Appearance.

    mine's 12ms. is that better?

and i just got off the phone helping my wife hook the monitor up to her new mac.

i love my wife. but she is easily overwhelmed at simple things if she thinks they're too complicated. she is a great artist, decorator, florist, cook, etc. but try to get her to plug in something w/more than two wires.....

She's great at all that stuff and you're upset cuz she thinks computers are more complicated then they are? I couldn't care less if my SO understood computers or how to change a tire or knew who was closing for the Dodgers. Just as I would expect her to be understanding of my ineptitude when it came to baking cupcakes, choosing curtains or ordering food at a french restaurant.

Now go home and give her and big hug, fix her cute computer and make everything better... jerk.

Btw, you said that she can cook!

ps:12 ms could be better than 16 ms depending on how it is measured. Grey to grey is the slower measurement.
