Toyota evolves the airbag
Instead of getting your head biffed by one big airbag when you crash, Toyota’s new safety system takes the pressure off your poor melon.

If like us you’ve dinked your motor once (or three times), you’ll know that getting a face full of airbag isn’t quite as painless as having a party balloon bounced off your nose. So in a move to save your nose and neck from talking a pounding should you crash, Toyota’s new airbag system (pictured) distributes the impact via two airbags that fire most of the pressure onto your shoulders while still supporting your head.

It’ll debut in the new Lexus models which go on sale in Japan this summer, but we can expect European models to follow suit soon after.

Yeah I don't see how it slows your head from continuing forward. You would slip right through the bum-hole. Talk about having your head up someone's ass. I imagine you would crack your face on the stearing wheel or something right? I wonder if they have a video with a test dummy.

If your shoulders are stopped in its tracks and your head still has room to move forward, I still see potential for neck injuries.....But then again that's pretty much what happens with seatbelts, so I'll just shut up and go back to my corner full of people who didn't go to med school.

I'm sure the Toyota guys would have taken all that into consideration....

But I do see a lot of people injuring their hands trying to grab the airjugs the moment they engage.....

I don't see that being any better.. but maybe.. I didnt like my airbag deploying in my face that was for sure.. and it burnt my wrists too.

Consider the alternative...

Don't know what kind of accident you had, but the steering wheel tends to be rather unforgiving to the face.

Is it just me, or do these air bags look like some surgically enhanced fun bags?

I wonder if they can draw some nips before they install them. It'll give you something to look at after they deploy and you'll have fun getthing them off your face.

Alternatively, I guess if you didn't have air bags those would be a picture of your lungs shooting out your mouth after a sudden stop.
