Does driving with a failed clutch mess anything up? Price for new one?

I'm a total newbie on driving a manual. The car i've got a 95 integra gsr that needs a clutch. I've already been told that driving it will be a pain, but will driving it mess anything else up? Or any suggestions on any possible side problems caused by the failed clutch or lead to the failure?

question 2, price. you guys know how much it should cost to get it replaced. It's so funny. I called up my local dealership and when the csr checked the price, he was so baffled by the price that he had to confirm it with the mechanic just to make sure the number he saw wasn't an error. $1200 bucks! Independent places priced at around $600.

also, any suggestions on a place in "THE OC"? Thanks.

Google integra forums and ask around. You should be able to find a used stock clutch for a bill or two. Also, call your local wrecking yards. Honda/Acura parts are expensive, so most wrecking yards will part out any Honda or Acura wreck that comes in.

As far as your first question: the only way your damaged clutch would hurt anything else is if it COMPLETELY failed and threw your driveline(shaft) into your gearbox. Prolly won't happen, but if it did, your car is totalled.

Don't put a used clutch or pressure plate into your car. Nobody I know would do that. The job is somewhat labor intensive. The parts probably account for a small part of the bill. $600 sounds about right.

Wow... I've never payed more than $100 or so for a new clutch. Granted, it was for a light duty truck, but still... Pressure plate, throw-out bearing, the whole deal, usually around $90.

The labor intensive part is unmounting the tranny (and sometimes dropping it all together) to get to the clutch plates.

Take a look at the San Diego Pennysaver. There are usually some pretty decent prices at "Mom and Pop" shops. That is how I found a good price for a clutch a few years ago.

or, just get used to the smell of burning corned beef hash. Bad clutch always makes me hungry.

1200 sounds a bit high for all that...

timing belt/water pump - ~350, parts and labor
    clutch - snow said 200parts+labor, let's say 400

I'm not sure what else would qualify as "major service." Maybe checking out the A/C, but I've seen signs for A/C checkups for 150. Oil/Filter is cheap, fuel filter shouldn't be too horrible, and fresh fluids everywhere isn't much either. Brakes might add onto that, but still... I dunno, I'd say try buying as many parts as you can on your own and then looking for a place that has good rates for labor.

For OEM parts (clutch, timing belt, water pump) try: http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/...catdisplay.jsp
(select your car... timing belt should be under "CAMSHAFT/TIMING BELT COVER" but I can't find where the water pump is). Timing belt+water pump shouldn't be more than 100 shipped. Not sure ab clutch.

If you need to do brakes, go to:
    www.groupbuycenter.com
Depending on what needs to be changed, look for Brembo OEM rotor blank replacements (don't get crossdrilled or slotted) and/or look for a pair of brake pads, Hawk XP's or Axxis Ultimates.
