    Unhappy Grandma's "friend" died

When my grandfather passed away a few years ago, my grandma was really lonely, so we got her a cockatiel. He became her best friend - most spoiled bird I ever knew. It gave her someone to talk to, and something to occupy her days. She only had it for a year and a half, but she was really attached. Well, tonight, it died, and Grandma's taking it pretty hard. when we bought it for her, we made sure to get something with a long lifespan (cockatiels typically live 10-15 years), because we didn't want her to have to deal with another loss! I'm not sure what to do to make her feel better - another bird doesn't necessarily seem like a great idea. this sucks...

Oh Avlena, I'm so sorry to hear that. No matter if it's human or an animal, a loss is always hard.

There are many wonderful weiner dogs out there available for adoption. They have a very strong personality and tend to act like little people. If your grandmother is out here in California, you can go here for adoptable dachshunds:

Just click on the state for the Dachshunds needing homes.
    I think over again
    My small adventures, my fears.
The small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things I had to get and to reach.

And yet there is only one great thing, the only thing:

To live to see the great day that dawns,
And the light that fills the world.

That sucks. I hope you can make her feel better soon! I know I cried off and on for several months after my cat Mac died. If you do get her a cat, don't get a kitten. They are very rambunctious and not as likely to make a good pet while it's young. Get one that is over a year old and make sure it is neutered or spayed, so she doesn't have to worry about it going into heat or anything.

We thought about a cat or dog originally, but we were worried that it would be too demanding. And she's already broken her hip once, so we don't want something running around her feet. At least with a bird, she can keep it in the cage if she wants, and it provides a lot of audio feedback (her eyesight is really bad).

thanks for all the tips btw!

Oh my gosh.. I want a sugar glider....

Sorry for your loss. Yeah its hard to say oh, we'll just replace him with another one. When i was younger and my dog died, i didn't want another one cause i was still just thinking about what happens when you lose one. I dont know. You would just have to ask her what she wants.
    Good luck with things.

Nope, no clue. From what I understand, birds can look and behave pretty healthy up until the day they die, so maybe it was a disease.

I guess the quiet house is too much for Grandma, she's already decided she needs another bird!
    Have a groovy day!
