    SS: Unexpected death

This morning we were woken up by a telephone call from my father in law, telling my wife that his father (her grandfather) had died overnight. This was completely and totally unexpected...in fact, we had planned on driving up to see them (her grandparents) this week. I think the fact that we were going to be seeing him this week makes it even worse as its been since last December that we have seen them.

The facts still arent very clear, but he had gone in for emergency surgery last weekend (12th) which to our knowledge was minor/routine and done by lapriscopy. I know that they ended up having to make slightly bigger incisions then they planned, but last we had heard he was fine.

Since my wife was out of town for the week, we hadnt heard anything since the day after the procedure, but we had been told that he was going home. As we hadnt received any calls regarding problems, we figured everything had followed what they expected.

At this point, its a waiting game to find out where we have to go/when we will leave for the funeral. Sometimes life just isnt fair.
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine...Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been....

it does make it worse, like you've said, that you haven't seen him in awhile unfortunately.
i beat myself up on that same premise when my great-gram passed away. i was in college and came home a weekend and meant to go see her, but didn't. i so should have.

i am sure you are a great comfort for your wife during this time uf, and it's
times like this that make you realize the importance of family.
