SSSSSS:Falling down stairs

My Grandmother was walking downstairs at 3am to let the dog out and she fell down the stairs and broke her ankle and her knee. I live the closest so she tried to call me and I didn't hear the phone my mom is next closest and she has just moved into a new house and had not hooked up a phone yet and all of their cells were in the kitchen, so she did not hear the calls either. So my Grandmother had to call my uncle who lives and hour away to come and help her, and had to lie on the floor waiting for him. I feel so horrible that I was not there for her. Well after they got her to the ER and she was casted and everything they go to get her up and give her crutches to send her home and they find out she is ot strong enough to use them. So she has to stay in the hospital for a while. They are also talking surgery for her knee down the line. My Grandmother is a diabetic and has always had trouble healing and I am just afraid of surgery with her. I don't know what to do. My mom was living with my Grandma until Saturday night and would have been there if it had happend before. I am mad at the realtor that claims she is tring to sell my granmothers house. It has been on the market for over a year, it is priced low for the neighborhood, one of the largest in the neighborhood, and this woman never wants to do open house she dosen't want to advertise the house. you know if she had sold this house my granmother would have been in a ranch and this would not have happend. I am just beside myself.

well she didn't call 911 because they would have to break the door down to get in and she didn't want that when someone could come with a key and then call 911 and let them in. She also didn't want to crawl back to the front door to let them in it had already taken her like 45 min to crawl to a phone and then get her cheat sheet for phone numbers and then to the kitchen so that she had light to read it and her magnifying glass. She was totally exhausted by that time and had nothing left by then.

Why do you feel bad about this??? Unless you pushed her down the stars you have nothing bad to feel about. It happened at 3am. You were asleep and unable to hear the phone. It's your grandmother who was so worried about a stupid material possesion that she didn't call 911. The extended hospital stay is going to cost a lot more than the stupid door.

You want someone to blame? Blame your grandmother. She is a responsible adult. Why is she letting the dog out at 3am? Why is she trying to wake a relative up at 3am when she knows she has to go to the hospital anyway? Why didn't she decide her life was more than a doorjam? Sure, I can see trying to call one that lives very close, but after two failed calls she should have dialed 911.

Don't feel bad for her lack of common sense. Take her down off the cross, somebody needs the wood.

Yes, I was blunt. And I hope Mommypooh is also blunt with her grandmother. People have died from being afraid or too embarased to call for help.
I hope she is ok and gets better soon. But to ensure something more serious doesn't occur later, Mommypooh should extract a promise from her that she will call 911 next time. Most likely she or her mom will be available, but if not, she shouldn't be waiting for over an hour for help.

Mommypooh wants to blame herself for some reason... but really, how many people are going to answer a phone at 3am? The great majority will sleep through it. The ones that are waken up won't even look to see who it is. The grandmother had an unreasonable expectation.

Well what makes me feel bad is my mom and I have had this conversation that we both need to keep ringing phones in the bedroom and I knew this could happen and I forgot to take the cordless to our room and I was not there. I am now getting a corded phone for the bedroom.

She would have had an extended stay anyways because she is not strong enough to use crutches. She will probaley end up in a nursing home for a while as a result.

Oh and the ambulance got lost and took 40 minutes to find her house. Well what stopped my Uncle from calling the ambulance before he got there instead of calling all the cell phones. It has been made a know fact in the family that now that my mom moved father away it leaves me closest to Grandma and I am the first contact for emergencies. We have always known this could happen that is why we are selling the house but the stupid agent is not trying to sell it. I think 14 months is rediculous. I hope to be able to go see her tonight but I don't know if she will feel up to me and the kids coming.

I think seeing her will make me feel better than not knowing how bad she looks if she is all bruised, or if she looks fine and just has a cast on her leg.

As for letting the dog out at 3 am she is 19 years old and needs to go when she needs to go. and it is either let her out or listen to her hack for hours and hours. So I guess she just wanted to sleep and that ment letting the dog out.

Yes my Grandmother is a very stubborn old women. We are lucky she called anyone that is the type of stubborn she is.

If your agent has supposedly been trying to sell the house for a year but isn't doing the footwork, fire him/her and get someone else. I would have to believe you're way past any contractural agreement you may have signed.

Open houses are a waste..all they do is bring in your neighbors to snoop around and gives the listing agent a chance to find new clients.

At the very least it ought to be MLS listed.

well the carpet is very badly damaged in one of the rooms and so is the door from the dog she never tells anyone that there is an allowance included for both of those which I think hurts the house. She has only had one offer in the 14 months it has been on the market and they only offered her 150,000 for a home listed in the 180,000. I think that is crazy. Yes I think she is finally going to fire the woman and go with this other guy who loves the house and thinks he could sell it easy.

well Grandma Had surgery yesterday. She came through fine and is on medicine to help her heal so that she doesn't end up with infections and so forth. She is staying in the hospital for about a week then well see if she can use crutches or not. If not she will probaley have to go to a nursing home for a while until she can use them or is able to walk again. I took my kids over to see her for a while and it really seemed to make her brighten up and feel a little better. Great Grandkids are wonderful medicine.
