    SS: No glasses

Well, I woke up this morning, and while trying to shut off the alarm clock, my hand brushed my glasses and sent them flying into the wall -- breaking the frames.

To make matters worse, I don't have a spare set of glasses, and the earliest I can get a new pair is Monday (I have a custom perscription, and the local eyeglass shops cannot do it).

Needless to say, I'm stuck at home now with VERY limited vision until Monday. To put things in perspective, with the best glasses I can use, I only have 20/50 vision in my right eye, and 20/200 in my left (without glasses I don't even have 20/200 in my right). I can still watch TV if I'm close enough (and even then I won't see small details), and am forced to use a screen magnification program for PC use (thank goodness the makers of ZoomText offer a 30-day trial version).

I've definately learned two lessons here:

    1) Always have a second pair of glasses "just in case"
    2) Do NOT leave my glasses on my nightstand by my clock when I go to bed.

    GRRRR.

My sister has keratakonis (I dunno if I spelled that right. heh). She is legally blind without her contacts in. She is having to get a 2nd opinion this week about whether or not it is time for a cornea transplant (she's 22 ). Anyway, she had a doctor's visit one Monday recently and the doctor wanted her contacts out for 2 days before the visit so her eyes would go back to their normal shape before doing the tests. So she had the same problem. Stay at home, nearly blind, for 2 or 3 days.

Books on tape are a great way to pass the time.

I hear ya..when I fell in April my glasses went flying about 3 feet past me(my Sillouette Rimless, Hingeless and Screwless 500 dollar pieces of crap that didn't break because they are flexible as hell-but the scratches on the lenses were so deep that they went through the non glare coating AND the nose pieces that are held on by a thin wire snapped completely off..)..I can wear them at home just to bum around in if I HAVE to because they are actually MORE comfortable with out those nosepieces, but seeing through them is difficult at best..I have another pair that the prescription is less on so they give me a headache-and if i had to wear my contacts all the time I'd rip my eyes out..
my daughters when nuts when they found out what I spent on the glasses(more money off their inheritance..lol)-but the frames alone were over 300, then add the astigmatic lens,bi-focals and the non glare coating and the grand total was around 515...never again-Its a good thing I had insurance on them or I'd be up sh(ts creek without a seeing eye dog. I think the next pair of glasses I get are going to be frames off ebay (with rhinestones).

Okay how in the world does something go flying across the room to its destruction when all you did was brush by it? Sounds more like they were collateral damage on your bid to destroy the clock. Next time not so rough.

*mental note* Don't let GuruX accidentally "brush" up against me or I'll go flying across the room and break a rib.

Feh, if you break a rib he'll just blame it on osteoporosis.

I'd like to know what kind of paper mache glasses you have!? Are these some kinda 1920 metal frame *real* glass things?

I have slept on my titanium frames, bent them up, and they still go back normally. I am not even sure I could step on them and break them.

Sounds like you need stronger framed glasses...

Hell, I've dropped mine and even had them accidentally sat on... and they survived.

That sucks about the glasses, but I know nothing of these vision problems you all speak of. I tested 20/15 in both eyes again this year at my annual eye exam, even with all the eye strain from my job.
    I think over again
    My small adventures, my fears.
The small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things I had to get and to reach.

And yet there is only one great thing, the only thing:

To live to see the great day that dawns,
And the light that fills the world.

Put me down as a second on that getting lasik idea.
I was so nearsighted I couldn't read the clock next to my bed without my glasses (and it had big lighted numbers). After Lasik 20/20.

OK, I guess "brushed" wasn't the right word here -- I was still groggy form just waking up that I guess I didn't realize how much force was used to send them into the nearby wall.

I'm guessing that the frame might have already been slightly bent, and that just made it worse.

As for lasik surgery, it's something I might be looking into -- have to see if it's even possible for me (seeing as I don't even have lenses in my eyes due to cataracts when I was born.

Umm... without lenses they can't correct them.
