Thread: fried processor, need a new one...

    Hi,
I Think i have fried my processor on my linux server. My friend pulled out the processor, jsut to look at the pins i guess, and put it back in the wrong position. I've heard that this shorts the processor, and i did see some smoke coming off the motherboard . Now the computer will not boot, it has the same beeps with the shorted processor in as it does with the processor removed entirely.
So, what can i do about this? I know the obvious solution is to buy a new processor, but here's the problem - its an AMD k5 133(socket 3). Its ancient, but it runs linux decently well w/o GUI. i haven't been able to find one anywhere, and i'm also concerned that the mobo is toast too because of the little smokey smokey incident.
I'd be willing to buy a new mobo and processor if i could find one that will fit in this case. Does anyone know anything about this? any advice will be much appreciated.

what kind of case do you have? if you are concerned that the case is rather small, check out microATX form factor motherboards.
