I want to get something really-really portable that can run basic windows-based applications. I won't be running anything resource-heavy, just basic office stuff. Are there PDA's that do this? Or do I need to get a small laptop? I think I've seen small Vaio's that run windows. Any ideas?

what's the other one called....libretto..libro? I think Toshiba makes them but they've been out since 1997 and they've had a new model each year. Also very portable.
the oqo is expensive and I don't really trust it since it's only been through 2 models and I don't think they have high volume.
If you're looking for a very portable laptop, look at the ibm x41 or the Dell 700m. But I don't think handhelds have gotten to that maturity to do what you want. PDAs do have pocket office but I don't think it's for heavy use, just random editing.
How about a tablet PC from HP or Dell? Those are pretty cool.

The one that I've seen seemed to be about the size of a really small laptop. So you're right, they aren't any smaller than a small laptop. How portable did you want it? Maybe a PocketPC device is the way to go.
I think I've seen some tablets that are really small. However, I was thinking more "ultraportable." The Oqo seemed overkill. Maybe something smaller than a 10" screen. It's best if it has an optical writable drive and USB 2.0 ports.
Fry's has a 10." Sony lappy on sale today, for 1200+ i think
It's been a little while since I've bought a new work notebook, but back in late 02-03 i bought a gateway 200xl (rebadge panasonic x10). It was 4.3 lbs, 14" screen/Pent M 1.6/built in CD/DVD+.. I still use it, think it's great..
Depending on how much you want to spend and how much you want to drool, I always go to the www.dynamism.com site to see what the latest coming out is.. at least it might give you some ideas.
I think, I'd get a Panasonic Y4 right now, if I had to get a new one
