    Fevers: Good or Bad?

I have read articles claiming that a fever is nature's way of combatting infection, and if you short circuit a fever by taking Tylenol or other drugs, you're really not helping your body.

Well, I had a fever for nearly two days and decided to take a Tylenol last night. It went from 101.9 degrees to 98.7 this morning. I was actually able to sleep, the hacking cough went away and I feel tremendously better.

So I am not sure I believe that theory.

drugs make us more comfortable. taking the tylenol is not going to prolong whatever is causing the fever in the first place.

disagree, having a fever can adversly affect your body, getting the temperature down puts your body in its normal working environment so it can recover better

Depends on how hot the fever is. Fevers is a way for your body to help fight infections, it's also a sign that the thermoregulatory system in your body is screwed up... often it is both. Most enzymes in your body like to work at body temperature but some do a little better at slightly high temperatures so IMO you don't absolutely have to knock down every little fever. That said, as a general rule if I know what's causing the fever, my opinion is to give them something to knock down the fever to make them feel better... or even if I'm not sure the cause but the fever is high (above 102 for instance... depending on the patient). The exception is babies, depending on how old they are and how high the fever and how much it takes to knock down their fever because they don't handle drugs as well as adults do. In Johnny's case, I'd give something because 101.9 is probalby high enough to make him feel pretty crappy... in esme's kid's case, I wouldn't. 100.9 is probalby low enough that she is pretty comfortable (the teeth coming in is probably what's going to annoy her) and we have a good explaination for the low fever so we don't expect it to get worse. Kinda depends on the scenario.

Disclaimer - The above opinion should not be taken as medical advise. My only advise is to talk to your doctor. If you are stupid enough to take anything I say seriously, you have nobody to blame for your cranio-anal inversion but your stupid self.

I'm with all stupids. Especially the medico on board.
Let it burn if it's low enough to tolerate, take some pills if it's annoying or worse.

a child's fever and teething are not related.

Really? I always thought they were.

You're the dentist, so I'll take your word for it. Our doctor had told us the same thing that Esme's did, so I always assumed that was the case.

here is a page on WebMD that debunks your doctor's theory, and there are many many more reputable sites/sources/studies that support this.

may not be caused by teething, but there is a relationship. All I know is each one of my kids had a fever every single time they were teething.

Fevers are tricky things that still aren't fully understood. They can be caused by virus or infection, they can be caused by allergies, or whatever. There isn't a real reason why teething couldn't cause a fever, it's just as likely it doesn't happen to everyone, which isnt' the same thing as not actually being related. Our own doctor said that while the studies implied one thing, he'd seen too many kids that had teething with fever to say it was related at all.
