In Love With an Italian Man? Beware!

    From netscape's main page:

In Love With an Italian Man? Beware!

Here is fair warning to any woman who falls in love with an Italian man: Marry him and don't expect much help around the house, including taking care of the children.

That's the word from a new international study conducted by Italy's statistics office, Istat. Why are Italian men such duds at home? Two reasons were cited:

    1. Late bloomers: Italian men become first-time fathers much later in life than men in other countries. The average age for Italians to become dads is 33, compared with younger than 31 for men in Spain, France and Finland. On average, Italian women have their first baby at age 27, six months before women in Finland.

    2. Blame it on their mothers: As many as 40 percent of Italian men ages 30 to 34 still live with their parents, far longer than anywhere else in the world. When they eventually become fathers, they do little to help their wives since they are so accustomed to being waited on by their mothers.

Yeh perhaps they should poll some REAL Italians instead of going by myths...that report is total horsesh|t. I hate stuff like that. I'll have to send an email off to my 412 cousins in Italy and see if they agree...

Actually Obby, it's not horsesh|t. 60 Minutes had a whole report on Reason #2. They went to ITALY and talked to REAL Italians, not Italian-Americans. No offense, but is that what you were thinking?

To show I am not making this up, the segment titled 'Mammoni' was aired on March 4, 2001.

    Summary:
Mammoni: So many Italian men are opting for the comfortable life their mothers provide, instead of leaving home to marry, that the birth rates are declining. Italian society has labeled them mammoni, or "mama's boys." Lesley Stahl reports.

    I think over again
    My small adventures, my fears.
The small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things I had to get and to reach.

And yet there is only one great thing, the only thing:

To live to see the great day that dawns,
And the light that fills the world.

Sorry, Obby, I posted this because I thought it was funny.....not because I thought there was any validity to the story.

Yes because 60 minutes is SOOO correct on everything they produce..
The sad part is-in that piece, they tried to project an image of Italian men that simply cannot be associated with all Italian men..absolutely no way..the majority of the "mammoni" (and I know this from personal experience with various cousins and friends who STILL live in Italy)are from very wealthy families who can support their deadbeat sons till the end of days because the guys are too cheap to leave and live off their own bankroll instead of Papa's..(and mamma's). Tell 60 minutes to head into some small towns where the girls are married off at 16 to 18 year old boys so they can start families and get their own farms going who don't live with momma and poppa till they are 34 or whatever they said....and yes it still happens. More frequent than not. And yes I'm talking about ITALIAN ITALIANS, not AMERICAN ITALIANS..60 minutes..pfffft.

What are you and Mike insinuating here? That Italians smell bad? I SERIOUSLY hope not because if you are you are bordering on some serious racist issues as far as I'm concerned..and that is one place you do not want to go with me. TRUST ME..don't go there.

yeh I know who they are talking about.

It's rude. plain and simple, and completely unfounded. And did I say RUDE? Perhaps they should stop talking smack about Italians (here OR abroad) before they have their facts right..I take my heritage very seriously. Again..a post that the CSJ would love to read.

Perhaps Mike and ooBaKeep (whoever the heck they are) are in need of an awakening.

obby...no offense but you're over reacting. guiseppewv is italian so ease up. and europeans are def more "stinky" than americans. having never been to italy i can't speak about them but in the event the shoe fits

on occasion some stereotypes are true. you've reinforced my belief that italian women are fiesty and take pride in feeding their family.

Oblong, why do you work so hard to portray the CSJ as arm breaking mobsters? You wield them like a club. I'm afraid I am going to have to report you to them for enforcing such a horrible stereotype.

It's just wrong to portray Italian Americans in such a manner.

I have no problem saying that a good number of men in Iran are like that. Its normal to live with your parents until you marry. Even then you might just bring your wife home instead of moving out.

I'm not Italian but from what I have heard about European men especially is that they do not consider it a bad odor but they say they smell like men and there are alot of people who would prefer that to the perfumed deodorants "most" of us use...so to each his own.
I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

Oh trust me, the CSJ is far from being arm breaking mobsters. I happen to be a member of the CSJ and let me tell you something Grimm, it has taken YEARS for Italians to try and over come the filthy demeaning stereotypes that have been heaped upon them for years.
They haven't done it with any "arm breaking" as you suggest-which once again-is reinforcing the negativity that has been shown to Italians, Jews, Blacks and many other ethnic and religious groups since they came to this country...Your attitude plainly sucks, and while you think you are being so obviously witty, sarcastic remarks such as the one you made that are the reason that groups like the CSJ have been created.
So..what? You think you can make a comment such as what you said that and it's going to hurt my feelings..hardly..it just makes it more apparent that you don't have the balls to take a stand against racial stereotyping yourself..
I can assure you I take this matter very seriously. And I am requesting that you stay out of this particular issue of which you have no knowledge or involvement unless you have something positive to say. On the other hand,
Your wit astounds me-seriously-get a clue. And in the meantime, perhaps you and your bad self should take a look at the CSJ websight or OSIA.ORG, OR UNICO.ORG and become a more informed citizen.
Instead of adding fuel to the fire, do something to put it out.

And Cheapie...yes, I know guisseppe is Italian, which is what makes this post even more sorry than it already is, and I will direct my comments to him privately.
As far as me overreacting-I have to disagree with you.
Comments like the ones that Mike, OoBaKeep, and Grimm made were simply childish, and disrespectful, irresponsible, and completely unneccessary, not only to me, but to anyone of Italian heritage who may be passing over these boards. I am a member in good standing of CSJ, and I also hold an office in NYOSIA,and am a member of the board of directors of the ACA (American Civic Association)in my area. I spend alot of my free time making sure that comments like this DO not happen-and it's done by using community education and service, and the ability to become part of the solution, not the problem.. I'm doing my part to stop the madness..what are you doing?

No arguement there. I guess what is good for the goose is good for the gander. I'd just like to know what their nationalities are so I can return the favor.

    stereotypin' war!

    it's on!

i guess it's the venue of stereotyping that make a difference too.
an Italian comedian could crack on his own nationality and get laughs, but it may not be as humourous for someone else to do it.

btw, guiseppewv, cheapie tells me you smell mighty fine. in fact he also said... well... i'll stop there.
