At Costco, the Rosemont and Jacob's Creek are inexpensive. Rosemount, probably around $8-$9/bottle. Jacob's Creek, $6.

I plan to have that for the parent tables only - a bit pricey - we can't really afford it for everyone - about 20 tables or so.
put out a few bottles of soda and a nice bottle of champagne for the toast. Is there going to be a bar, or just what's on the tables? You could be sneaky - get some bottles of Charles Shaw from Trader Joes, but get new wine labels printed out with you and your new hubby's name on them, and maybe a cute picture. You can probably do it on a computer. And voila, they're instantly transformed into nice bottles of wine!
We served Rodney Strong wines at our wedding. But I gotta tell ya..the free Heinekin was WAY more popular than the wines were.

personally, i don't think having a cash bar is that bad. On wedding forums, they talk about cash bars like it's a horrible sin, but if you talk to regular people (in other words, non-bridezillas), they realize how pricey an open bar is and actually expect a cash bar, or tickets, or something like that.no open bar - cash bar was a no go a lot of ppl don't like that.

suggest to your friends if they want more booze, they should bring it themselves! at the last vietnamese wedding i went to, our table had a bottle of vodka that we were tearing through!

We gave away Beer, wine, champagne, soda, and water. Mixed drinks were via cash.

Merlin will (kind of) remember this well, but when Mrs. Kevster and I got married we had 4 hours of open bar at the reception. We ran into a problem with the number of guests not being enough since most of her family wasn't going to show up. Granted, her family was all over the place from North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Wisonsin, Florida, North Carolina, etc. We still had about 130 guests or so but it was 85% my family since they are mostly in California. The reception hall had a fixed minimum charge for weekend events and due to the number of guests showing up we were well under that minimum. We got the best meal we could get and then we had enough left over for 4 hours of open bar.
Have I ever mentioned my family is Irish? Let's just say some of my family really took advantage of the open bar. My relatives still talk about that party almost 5 years later and it has achieved a kind of 'golden memory' type of status in which most family events are now judged by.
As for the wines, go for a Southern California Chardonnay, something from Santa Barbara County, if you can - they generally have a rich buttery flavor. For the red, it looks like you've aleady got that covered. If at all possible, try to get a good bottle of champagne for the toast. Mrs. Kevster and I went to three weddings the year before and had lots of notes of things we didn't like and Korbel champagne was one of them. I had a bottle of White Star for every table at the toast and it really made a difference. My thought about it was, "This is our one day to do this, and I want to do it right".

Goose, Hennessy VSOP, and Kinzmarauli red wine are the bare minimums

well - since money is an issue - I have talked to my mom - cash bar is what we will do if those at the wedding REALLY want to drink - we are getting Rosemount Shiraz - Henessy VSOP for the 3 parent tables along with the Shiraz, I decided against white wine cause when I asked my parents and friends nobody really drinks that plus when we went to his cousin's wedding it was red wine only at the table. I don't think we are slapping our names or anything on the bottle - haven't decided yet... but we'll see...
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions - I did go to Costco to check out the prices - but MD Costco doesn't carry alcohol - only VA ones do...
