medium or small. I think that's pretty much all the choice you have. I suggest upgrading the memory later (i.e. not from Apple) because they charge too much. However, I do suggest you upgrade the hard drive if you think you need it.

I have the 12 much better than the 14.

Id even be willing to sell my 12. We could discuss that elsewhere. Search back to earlier this year where I had it up for sale.

12 is the best size for a bed car or plane... Powerbooks are better I would say, but my ibook is a great starter mac, and is great for little tasks.

the only reason i see the need for a 14" ibook is for someone that is badly far-sighted since the 12 and 14 both have 1024x768 res. However... if you have a bit of patience, say anywhere from around 2-6 months wait it out for the x86 ibooks to be released.

Yea I couldnt agree more with waiting till feb or when ever x86s come. My major compaint about my 12" 1.1ghz 768mb ram... is the processing speed, and maybe the 30gig hard disk, but now my 60 5G alieviates that.

I think that believing the x86 Macs are coming out within a year is wishful thinking. My advice is to get the 12 inch ibook loaded with RAM to get you familiar with the Mac platform. If you like it, and think you want to do multimedia eventually, then wait for the x86 computers to be announced. Then swoop up one of the Dual Core G5's cheap.

You basically hit on the two points that I'm aiming at right now.

I have grown more and more and more fond of OSX since using it at work every day. I've never hated it per se but I've never really been awestruck by it either. Nevertheless...it would be nice to have a computer that I don't really have to worry about maintenance with (ie spyware and viruses). That's not to say that they're not possible, it's just not likely.

Anyhow - my initial thought though is that while I want a Mac, I'm waiting for the Intel Macs to come out. I have no choice on the matter regardless, because we're broke as hell. But nevertheless, hopefully the Intel Macs will be cheaper (I'm hoping a lot cheaper than the PowerPC Macs and I can pick up a Mac with high performance for a good price ($600 is a fair shot for a Pentium cpu system IMHO, but this of course depends on if Apple's going to milk the consumer even though it's spending less on parts). Otherwise if the Intel Macs aren't cheap enough, hopefully by that time the PowerPC ones will have dropped in price.

If neither happens, then I go the halfass route and build a PC around a Pentium D cpu and install the OSX86 leak.

i have a 12" powerbook and LOVE IT. great size. the 15" is probably a bit too heavy for me since i take mine to work every day.
