Thread: Fried my processor?

    Hi,
I Think i have fried my processor on my linux server. My friend pulled out the processor, jsut to look at the pins i guess, and put it back in the wrong position. I've heard that this shorts the processor, and i did see some smoke coming off the motherboard . Now the computer will not boot, it has the same beeps with the shorted processor in as it does with the processor removed entirely.
So, what can i do about this? I know the obvious solution is to buy a new processor, but here's the problem - its an AMD k5 133 (socket3). Its ancient, but it runs linux decently well w/o GUI. i haven't been able to find one anywhere, and i'm also concerned that the mobo is toast too because of the little smokey smokey incident.
I'd be willing to buy a new mobo and processor if i could find one that will fit in this case. Does anyone know anything about this? any advice will be much appreciated.

its a Compudyne case, don't understand Case sizing or anything, its a "desktop" case, not a tower or anything. THX

Try Circo Technologies. They're a bit expensive but they make pretty good cases. http://www.circotech.com

It's usually not worth fixing a computer that old. You're probably better off checking eBay for a used computer... You can find them dirt cheap there.
