Sodimm

Looking to put a bit more RAM in my laptop, just a coupla questions. Some areas I'm quite ahead on, stuff like this I need a bit of help!

I have 4 available ports to put more SODIMMs in, a mate has said it isn't crucial but it's recommended you have the same brand of SODIMM in there. Should I be looking to get the same as I currently have installed? Or is it possible to just buy a random 1GB SODIMM and put it in? Will it cause any problems buying different brand memory? Just 1 more thing... honest. Will it matter what ports I put anymore SODIMMS in?

Another quick question, if I just want to upgrade to having 1GB of RAM when I currently have 256, would the best thing to do just be to take out the 256 I currently have and put in a new 1GB? I'm struggling to find anything around on the net.

Just toss in another stick. You don't have to match the brand. Go to crucial.com and use its memory finder to figure out what memory you need, then just find it cheap somewhere else (or at crucial). It's really not that finiky.

Thanks, sounds like I was trying to make an easy job hard! Is there any limit on what I can put in? I currently have 256MB and am looking to put in another GIG. One website reckons my brand of laptop has a 1GB limit though?

actually there is a limit to what a laptop can handle, regardless of the number of slots you may have. What model laptop is this?

HP compaq nx9010. Thanks for your help, really appreciated! Got a game for Christmas today that I want to run more smoothly so can't wait to get hold of some more RAM.

Edit: The crucial site has only given me crucial part numbers so I can't go looking on other sites for the same part!

crap...looks like it only goes up to 1GB. So maybe you can buy smaller sizes that add up to 1GB. It might be cheaper than getting a 1GB stick.

I think another 512 will have my game running smoothly, I've never needed more than the 256 I have at the mo so haven't ever looked into upgrading! So any 512 stick should do me fine then? Cheers for your help gear. I would say I hope I can be of assistance some day but I doubt I will be!

Sounds fine. I would pump it up to 1Gb, but that's because I'm a geek.
