Meet the Monique behind the mouth
By: RANDY DOTINGA - For the North County Times
The first thing you notice about Monique Marvez is her voice.
It's raspy. Somebody-please-get-this-woman-a-lozenge raspy.
But all the gargling in the world won't help: 100.7 Jack FM's new morning host has sounded like a post-bender Lauren Bacall since she was a teenager, and she doesn't even smoke.
The second thing you notice about Marvez is her mouth.
It's big. Really big. Oh-no-she-DIDN'T big.
Short people who can't see over the steering wheel? They shouldn't get driver's licenses. Porn on video iPods? It'll make employees start taking "stroke breaks." Britney Spears and Paris Hilton? "Ridiculous tramps."
Don't quite get how Marvez views the world? She'll "break it down Barney-style," making things simple just like the purple cartoon dinosaur.
Gays in the military, for instance.
"If you can hold a gun, I don't care what you are," she said this week. "I have actually heard a queen tell another queen, 'I will smack the face-lift off you.' And it wasn't an idle threat. ... I don't think we need to exclude these people from our military."
In fact, she said, the brass should provoke gays before battle by asking them, 'What foundation are you using? Your pores look huge!"
Unapologetically bossy, gleefully politically incorrect and "as blunt as a pile of wet leather," this comedian-turned-morning-host is that rarest of things on the San Diego radio ---- an original.
"I'm a good radio personality but an unbelievable comic," she declared in an interview. "I kill myself."
In person, Marvez is loud and brash, with lots of hair and lots of ---- well, let's just say she once joked that she's afraid of cold weather "because I don't know at what temperature saline gel freezes."
She's somewhere past her mid-30s ---- she won't say how far past ---- and lives in Encinitas with a couple of dogs and her latest husband, a ex-Navy SEAL and former minor league baseball player named David Cosby.
As for her past, she grew up as a "brainy, chubby girl with glasses" ---- part Venezuelan, Puerto Rican, Cuban and Mexican ---- in the Miami-area city of Coral Gables.ÝShe credits her father with inspiring her to become a strong woman who accepts responsibility for mistakes.
"I was raised to be pretty upfront, pretty honest," she said.
Both parents went on marrying sprees, getting hitched to a variety of spouses, including (twice) each other. Marvez got married to her high school sweetheart ---- like her parents, she ended up getting hitched several times herself ---- and became a stand-up comedian, one of the few Latino women in the comedy business.
For years, Marvez traveled the country riffing on everything from her "Reality Chick" personality ("I put the 'ho' in honesty") to the R-rated challenges of having sex with a midget.
Then radio entered the picture. During a stop in San Diego, she got invited to join former talk show host Ted Leitner on KFMB-AM. She had Leitner in stitches and a foothold in the broadcast world.
"I was literally plucked off the stand-up stage. I'd never done any type of radio."
Then came a stint at a radio station in Indianapolis, of all places, where she co-hosted an afternoon show and served as grand marshal of the city's gay pride parade. The Indianapolis job ended when the station switched to country, but Marvez wasn't out of work for long.
Last year, Star 100.7 dumped its name, its music format and its "Jeff & Jer" morning team. After a few months, the newly created 100.7 Jack FM brought in Marvez to team with station veteran Greg Simms and create the "Monique & the Man" show.
There are a few things you won't hear. Marvez won't talk about the previous night's "American Idol" or interview the latest castaway from "Survivor." And you'll never hear her gabbing the entire morning away like "Jeff & Jer" or "Dave, Shelly & Chainsaw."
"The key to comedy is brevity," she said, adding that too many radio personalities "are in love with the smacking of their saliva."
When she does talk, her words often shock poor Simms, who's a bit of a traditionalist. ("It's like somebody pulled him out of the '50s and flung him," Marvez said.) But then again, Marvez herself is a bit of a traditionalist at times, spouting off against poor female role models who have too much influence over American girls.
It's too early to know whether Marvez will pose a threat to the top morning shows in town. Her voice can be aggravating, and a little of her take-charge personality goes a long way.
But considering the alternatives, she just might thrive.
Monique's song of the day is CRUCIFY, by Army of Lovers :lucky:
While straying away from this morning's chattiness, I stopped on 94.9 and heard them say "The best thing about morning shows that play only music is, well, the music." I agree and may be spending more time over there in the mornings.
