    Anyone use a cellular aircard for 'net access?

    A buddy just called me from Central FL. He just got a Verizon aircard for his laptop as this is his only option (aside from satellite) for broadband.

    I directed him to the Speakeasy speed test, and this is what he got:

    Download Speed: 690 kbps (86.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
    Upload Speed: 3786 kbps (473.3 KB/sec transfer rate)



    700K down is typical, from what I can gather, but WTF is up with almost 4 MB UP?

    Is this the norm?

    I never used the Verizon, but the Sprint card was crap. I did several speed tests with a solid signal and got varied results. I would go as low as 25K a sec to around 125K a sec. My speed was never constant enough to see any value of that card over some of the older mor reliable cell technology.

    I find the opposite - the Sprint card is the best one available at the time I tested them. I tried Sprint, Verizon & Cingular, and Sprint was by far the fastest & had the most consistent connections.

    Today the only other one I would consider is Cingular, since they offer international coverage.


    Mike, as far as your speed results, I'd guess that's a fluke. A lot of the networks are now ramping up to broadband speeds - maybe he caught them in the middle of an upgrade.

    when did you test? with what card?
    Sprint now has a greater EVDO (new gen. of data services) coverage than Verizon from what i've read, and is also faster on average.

    I tested in October with an EVDO card, though I don't know the model or gen #. I can find out if you're curious.
