Recommend me a good PC game

Can somebody recommend me a good PC game? The game can be old, but not too old that I'll need some emulator. Here's a sense of what I want. The game doesn't necessarily have to satisfy ALL of the following. These are just some guidelines:
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    1. Currently, I'm NOT in the mood for strategy(star/warcraft), FP shooter(CS, Max Paine), racing, puzzles and RPG.

    2. I want something that I can get lightly addicted to.

    3. I've always liked games with either a bit of a reality factor(the 'SIM' series games, railroad tycoon, etc) or the adventure factor(Sierra/LucasArts graphic adventures, Prince of Persia, Metal Gear Solid, etc).

    4. Something that I can enjoy for short sittings. (thus no RPGs. Syndicate Wars was good because it had short stages)

    5. Honestly, I'm not very good at games, so I don't wany anything that can easily get frustrating, or in which I could get hopelessly stuck.

Now is that too demanding for a guy that just wants to have some fun? Thanks guys!

I believe there's Railroad Tycoon 1, 2 and 3. Would I be able to enjoy the sequels of Railroad tycoon without necessarily playing Railroad tycoon 1?

Jees, I'm sorry. I meant to say RollerCoaster Tycoon! At any rate, I've found that for both Zoo Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, you wouldn't have had to have played the first one at all.

    Freelancer.

It's a space sim that uses the mouse and keyboard (WASD) for flying (which is teh awsom!) and it has a great mission-hint system and map so you don't have to memorize what you've done and need to do.

Also, if you like adventure games, I've heard Syberia is good, but download a hint guide at www.gamefaqs.com to keep from getting stuck.

I will second Freelancer for a good game that is easy to pick up.
P.S. Max Payne is not a FPS, it is a TPS (third person shooter)...

If you like Metal Gear Solid, I have enjoyed the Splinter Cell series. It can be similar to a first person shooter, but the objective is NOT to shoot anybody if you can. Find your way around and try to avoid the bad guys. There is the occasional level where you do have to fight some more. The first one is pretty cheap and not too dated. Chaos Theory is the latest. Try one of the demos to see what you think. The second (Pandora Tomorrow) and third games include online or single player but I stick with single player.

Civilivation 4 isnt bad, and you can save the game and come back later...this might be against the rules of what you were looking for, but I figured I would just mention it!

I would recommend KOTOR or KOTOR2... those are 3rd party shooters with a great storyline.

Okay, so the KOTORs are actually action/RPG (the first is more turn-based than the second, though both mix elements of real-time and turn-based), but both games are highly addictive and will have you glued to the screen for quite some time.

Another highly addictive game (though I know that is not what you requested), that will be out in about 2-3 weeks is Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The preliminary reviews are raving about the game on both XBox 360 and PC. Be warned: you may not be able to step away from the keyboard.

thanks for the recs guys, those look really good, but not into shooters, action nor RPGs right now. I guess I just can't handle the pressure of the high-paced, edge-of-my-seat suspense. I want some light-hearted fun.

Just played the trial version of Freelancer. It totally reminds me of the classic, "Wing Commander." Syberia's looking very good. I'm considering it, but I wanna wait for some more recommendations. THanks everybody! Keep 'em coming.

I just installed the full edition of Freelancer and also won an auction for a set of both <Syberia 1 & 2> on eBay for 8 bucks. I'm quite sure this will keep me busy well through the year. Thanks for all the great recommendations.

    You're welcome.

In Freelancer, do sidequests. They're worth it, some are fairly amusing.
