DVD Writer stuck in PIO mode....

I'm only getting 1x-2x write speeds on my Pioneer DVR-109. I've tried uninstalling the drivers of my IDE controller channels (I have two "primaries" for some reason??). I rebooted, the drivers reinstalled themselves, but it's still stuck in PIO mode.

I think I've heard that I should check the cable and jumper settings? I'm not sure how. I wanna fix this. I've googled the problem and can't seem to find any guides that fit my situation. Anybody have experience with this?

What about starting again. Pulling the drive out, restarting, uninstalling the hardware and drivers of the Drive. Turning off, plugging in, and restarting. And letting windows update or the newest drivers be found? Also maybe look up a firmware update for your hardware..

THanks mechmike. I'll do some research and get back to you guys.

    update:
    1. Per advice that a bad cable might be the culprit, I check the cable connections. First, I confirmed that I have a 80 way IDE cable. Then I realized that one side of the connector was not pushed all the way in. I found a bent pin on the DVD-R drive, I managed to straighten it out and push the IDE cable all the way in.
    2. The jumpers for the CD-R and DVD-R (the two devices currently connected to the IDE controller) were both set to "cable select." I changed those to master and slave respectively.
    3. Did the whole uninstall driver and reboot drill. Drivers reinstalled themselves, but nothing has changed.

I'm about to go the regedit route.

dammmm. messed around with regedit. Tried updating the firmware. Still can't get it to work. I'm getting suspicious it's a faulty drive. Are there any diagnostic programs out there that can assess the well-being of the DVD-R drive?

How do you know you are in PIO mode? Is that what the IDE controller is telling you in Device Manager?

Yes. Even when I designate the device as "DMA when available," it is always in PIO mode. Nothing changes after I reinstall the drivers. I'm guessing it's a hardware problem in the drive itself, but before I get anything sent it, I'm planning to do some more troubleshooting by swapping the power cables with my CD-R drive. I'm also gonna try completely removing my CD-R drive out and plugging my DVD-R drive in place of that. If that works, I'll just leave the CD-R out. Over the past year, I don't think I've ever needed both drives at once.

I just read mechmike's 5th link. Did you read it? It appears that after 5 or 6 DMA problems, Windows resorts to PIO mode. The RegHack method noted may solve the problem??

I think I tried one of the little automated programs featured on that site. I thought that would automatically edit the registry for me. It didn't work. But then again I'm not sure if that's what the program actually did. Looking at it again, it might have simply done the device manager tweak. I'll have to read it over and try it again. Thanks for the heads up.

In case it all doesn't work out, does anybody know how to get warranty service for Pioneer OEM DVD-R drives bought from Newegg? Do I getservice fro Newegg or Pioneer?

Have you installed any games that have Starforce copy protection? It's an evil evil thing, and in some rare cases has been known to slow down people's drives.

This site has ways to detect it, remove it, and lists of games that use it. If the regedit stuff hasnt been working for you, it's something else to look into...

I don't really play games. The only games that I've played since I bought my computer are the trial versions of both F.E.A.R and Freelancer. The thing is I'm pretty sure the drive was slow before I played those...Thanks for the heads up though. I'll look into it!

    Finally figured it out!!

The regedit hack didn't work, so I pulled the CD-R out and connected the DVD-R in place of it. Now I'm back in DMA mode and getting X16 speeds. So I'm assuming it was the IDE cable's end connector. As I said before, I never really needed the CD-R drive, so I'll just be leaving it out and using a single drive now.

That was TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much trouble. But I couldn't have done it without all your help. THanks so much for everybody that gave their tips!

Actually, by switching the cable, a different set of controlling information is now applying to it (a different IDE channel). If the reverting to PIO mode was caused by excessive errors, it may come back.

Hmm... Even if it was the same cable, just a different connector on that cable? In the device manager, the DVD-R appears under the same "Primary IDE channel" category.

I really hope PIO doesn't come back. I hate you PIO.

If you changed connectors on the same cable, you moved the drive from secondary to primary (or visa versa) on the IDE channel. (In fact, the first time I started having troubles with a DVD burner slowing down, I switched it like that to get it working correctly - until I did some further searching to find out what was really going on.)

So in this case, is Primary-Secondary the same as Master-Slave?

A drive that is on the primary channel is usually Master and the Secondary is Slave (if you use Cable Select, that is what they would be set to).
