Girls attempt real-life version of video game
Residents alarmed; teens could be charged
    Beacon Journal staff report
Five teenage girls from Portage County face potential criminal charges after attempting to play a real-life version of Super Mario Bros.

The Portage County Hazardous Materials Unit and Bomb Detection Unit were called in to downtown Ravenna on Friday morning after seventeen suspicious packages -- boxes wrapped in gold wrapping paper with question marks spray painted on them -- had alarmed residents.

Boxes were found at the Immaculate Conception Church on West Main Street, the Portage County Courthouse, Deluxe Pastries, the corner of Cherry Way and Main Street, Reed Memorial Library, Ravenna High School and a residence at Sanford and Main streets.

Five girls -- age 16 and 17 -- claimed responsibility for making and placing the packages. The girls said they found an Internet site that included step-by-step instructions for creating replicas of blocks featured in the game.

The Ravenna Police Department will be working with the Portage County Prosecutor's Office regarding possible criminal charges as a result of the game.

They should not be charged for anything. If their motives were nefarious then they should but it seems like it was not.

Wow. Some of those are pretty good. I kinda like the idea, though I understand the concerns. I doubt any terrorist would use a big Mario style shiny box for a bomb, though. I also, as a magician, commend those who used a little ingenuity to make some of them "levitate."

Not really against any law that I've ever heard of.

Maybe they thought that they were planted by The Riddler, and Batman was nowhere to be found, so...

True. I wonder how many people jumped up to bounce their heads off of the damn boxes. It would have been great if some were rigged to open up upon impact and drop, say, monopoly money or something - pinata style.

i love all the comments posted by people to the linked article... they all boil down to "IT WAS F***ING URBAN ART; CAN I BEAT UP THE PEOPLE WHO ARE CONSIDERING CHARGING THEM WITH A CRIME?!?!?!"

the boxes definitely would fun up the neighborhood.

I see the only problem being, Where they left the Boxes. I didn't read where it said they were left if it said. I saw where the other people left theirs, but was it on Government Property or anything.

About the only "criminal Charges" I could see would be Littering and that's Stretching it.
