    tv tuner cards

So i decided to run my tv through my pc, now from my understanding i still need a cable box because a tv tuner card only accepts 128 channels. So i already ordered another cable box. What tuner card should i get? i am dedicating a monitor especially for tv purposes.

well When I was building my HTPC, I tested around 6 cards.. They were emuzed TV tuner (used in Dell's), Asus TV tuner, Hauppage PVR-150, PVR-250, ATI Elite TV tuner 550pro and Nvidia dual tv tuner. Overall the ATI elite TV tuner was the BEST! Awesome picture quality.. You can check all the reviews and the ATI elite tv tuner stands out. I have a dual tv tuner setup...

I've never liked any of the really cheap TV tuners I've used. They always have flakey drivers. So I recommend staying away from no name brands.

Yeah its 125 channels,You would need to get a Microsoft remote control with receiver and IR transmitters to change the channel in your setup box. Dual TV tuners are used so that, one can be used to record and the other can be used to watch TV. Say if you have two imporant shows at the same time, One can be used to record and you can watch TV on the other. Remember to get a Mpeg2 hardware encoder so it will reduce some stress on the system.

If you are going high def, you need a regular hardware mpg2 tv tuner and a high def tv tuner.

so just to get it completely straight though. if i do get a cable box, will i be able to watch the rest of the channels or still 125? Also i was under the impression that the ATI elite comes with a remote control as well as with an mpeg2 encoder

IF you get a cable box, you will connect to the TV tuner using RCA input. So when you change a channel, The IR transmitter on the Microsoft remote receiver sends out IR signal through the IR transmitter and it changes on the setup box. The IR transmitter is placed in front of the Cable TV setup box. The ATI Comes with a remote but its RF based and so it wont work. So yes you need to shell out another $30 for the microsoft remote and receiver.

You can do that but if you want to schedule to record TV, who is gonna change the TV channel manually?? unless you are gonna set that in your cable setup box Or change it everytime manually to record it, it is gonna record whatever channel the cabletv setup box is set to. So... a ir transmitter is gonna be needed

    any other questions ask away

Maybe. If your cable box outputs the channels through coax-rf and you change channels using your TV tuner, you may be able to just buy a splitter from Radioshack instead of getting two cable boxes.

Well do not use the software that comes with it. I dont use it. Either use beyond TV or Windows media center 2005.

You get what you pay for. Buy one from Chinamart (Walmart) & it's sure to give you that good wholesome 6 months & its broke quality.
