Oops..Smoked a Duron!!

oops..Looks Like I havea Smoked Duron 700 on my hands (the white sticke on bottom is scorched!) ...Now how could that of happened??? I never OC'ed it...In fact it was brand new and I could not get a Clean boot on my ASUS A7V MB...
The Asus MB will autodetect the CPU in default settings and adjust the voltage accordingly..right..??? Also..I was attempting to run it without a CPU fan/Heatsink...but figured I would have enough time prior to frying it to get it all setup and running..right??? Could that fry the CPU..that fast..? I know that sucker got HOT!! FAST...!!

Any Ideas would be appreciated before I smoke CPU #2...G!

Rob,

How long was the chip running without a heatsink and fan? You are right to assume that this isn't a good thing and could be the reason your Duron doesn't work anymore.
Let's get it all figured out before Duron #2 becomes another victim. Can't you just see Sally Struthers? "All these poor chips under so much heat. Won't you help?"

Contemporary cpu's such as the duron run very hot Peardog. So what happened is that the duron burned up when it didn't have any cooling.
Its likely the cpu is dead jim er Peardog. However there is a slight chance the overclocking gods were smiling upon you and it didn't die. So test the duron with the cpu fan/heatsink on it and see if the duron truly has gone to overclocking heaven.

Any Ideas would be appreciated before I smoke CPU #2...G! We know smoking and burning cpu's are bad for your health so please put a cpu fan/heatsink on the processor. Do not run it without any cooling! Also ensure the heatsink is mounted correctly. Oh yeah don't forget the thermal paste either.

Thanks for all the input guys...Very informative..
I'll remember to bring the Marshmallows with me next time I try to run the CPU without a fan/heatsink... Maybe sing a few songs and tell ghost storys around the CPU fire... UGh...

Peardog, approximately how long (in minutes or seconds) were you running the Duron without heatsink? You didn't indicate how long in your post.
