    Project Supermoto YZ426

well, guys about 3 or 4 months ago i bought a dirtbike - '01 Yamaha YZ426... never had one before, but riding dirt seemed pretty fun on a buddys borrowed bike... not long after, i started building it into a totally different bike that i've wanted for a long time - a street legal Supermoto.

basically, you take a big dirtbike, put 17" wheels on it ($1200 give or take) an oversized front brake rotor, play some tricks with the Tag agency, get it tagged, insured, add blinkers, a bigger stator (alternator), headlight and taillight, switches, mirrors, and a GPS speedo, and all of a sudden, you have a street legal really fun dirtbike capable ot taking turns faster than most sportbikes.

well, lastnight me and my 426 made our maiden voyage around town... about 60 miles or so.

Definitely one of the more unique things i've ridden on the street.

Picture is of it parked in teh only lighted area at our local warehouse we stunt at at night.

Looks like fun. I am too old, stiff, brittle and out-of-shape to motard, but I like to watch... Did a lot of MX/Dirt in my much younger/lighter years.

man i hit up our local kart track / motart heat races last weekend... i've never worried less about crashing on a track that that night. I was all over it - 4 laps in (still set up on MX suspension) i was starting to back it in... Seems pretty easy, but i've got a lot to learn still.

and yeah, around here, the good guys on the fast 'Tards will lap you in a 15min session unless you're turning some fast numbers. I'm not very good yet, but i'm faster than 90% of the street riders in town and i stil get passed by the motards. Of course, they're usually some 525 KTM or something big with a reasonable top end too...

If you havent crashed at the track yet, you're not trying hard enough Seriously.

Honestly, this thing is sooo forgiving... you can go over something, get the bike all upset, and just manhandle it back to where you want.... and if you do wad it up... well, whats the chances of actually doing more than $200 in damage?

Next on the list is a set of home made bark busters in black.
